THEN: Deja News Founder (1995)
NOW: CTO of Barfly Interactive Networks

Steve Madere founded the Usenet search engine Deja News (later Deja.com) in 1995. It provided a simple Web interface search of archived newsgroups, and changed the way online discussions took place. Google eventually acquired the archives, calling it Google Groups.

Madere now serves as CTO of Barfly Interactive Networks, an interactive signage company in Austin, Texas. As a side project, the father of three started an automatic playlist generating system available at mixzing.com.

Madere says he approves of what Google has done with his archives, despite grumblings by some long-time users. “They’ve been extremely principled and they understand what value Usenet has brought,” he said in an interview with SAI.
