Estimated Value: $125 million
Business: Chinese video site--one of the three vying to become the "YouTube of China"
Location: China
More Info: About Youku
CEO: Victor Koo
Investors: Brookside Capital Partners, Sutter Hill Ventures, Farallon Capital Management, and Chengwei Ventures
Analysis: Youku is currently the third-place Chinese YouTube clone (take a look at the site.) The company has raised $40 million in funding and struck a partnership with MySpace. As with all of China's video sites, governmental interference is a concern. (See this report from the Seattle Times).
The data we've seen suggest that Youku is running third to Tudou and 56.com, with 14% of the market. We like the company's investor base, and $40 million in capital provides a reasonable war chest. We have no revenue information yet, and we expect the company is losing boatloads of money.
