Google Satellite Now Watching You From 423 Miles Up

The GeoEye satellite that Google will use to provide mapping imagery at 50-centimeter resolution successfully blasted into space today. So don't leave your underwear lying all over your lawn.

Andy Plesser of Beet.TV put together a cool video animation (below). Stephen Shankland of CNET has the story:

GeoEye-1 will orbit 423 miles above Earth, but it will be able to gather imagery with details the size of 41 centimeters... Google, though, is permitted to use data only with a resolution of 50cm because of the terms of GeoEye's license with the U.S. government.

Each day, the satellite will be able to gather a high-resolution "pan-sharpened" format surface area equal to that of about New Mexico, the company said.

"The GeoEye-1 satellite has the highest ground resolution color imagery available in the commercial marketplace and will produce high-quality imagery with a very accurate geolocation," said Google spokeswoman Kate Hurowitz, adding that most commercial satellite imagery has a resolution of 60cm. "It is our goal to display high-resolution imagery for as much of the world as possible, and GeoEye-1 will help further that goal."

50 cm resolution? Underwear on your lawn? The way I see it, it would be difficult to represent the general shape of underwear in less than 10 by 8 pixels, and double that resolution to make it definitive. I don't know who has underwear that spans over 2.5 meters, but someone needs to go on a diet.

Google earth shows nothing that isn't already public domain. The nightly news is more intrusive. I enjoy looking at future vacations spots and place that are discussed. Go to Geoeye's website Google is not their only customers.

They will also supply imagery to Homeland Security and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency or NGA for short it is one of the very few of the alphabets that not many people know about. As well as the pentagon.

There is only imaging equipment on geoeye-1 at .41m of resolution.

@David Geoeye-2 which will start being built after the money starts rolling in from Geoeye-1 will have a .26m resolution.

Are you saying the government will allow Google to use the higher reloution data with Geoeye-2 but not Geoeye-1?

If 50cm resolution literally means one pixel per 50 centimeters, this is NOT very impressive. Current airplane photography on Google maps is far superior.

It is a bit of a balancing act between empowerment and privacy isn't it... I am thinking of the Arthur C Clark comment. On the one hand, I would like to know if an invasion was coming to my city, though I do not think this satellite spends enough time looking at one place does it? On the other hand, I really would not want to put a roof over my lawn just to keep people from watching me sunbathe... It would make it hard to sunbathe for one thing.
