He said the usefulness of the traditional OS is being reduced by the web but not eliminated. Its going to take time for the traditional OS to become 100 percent irrelevant.
In the meantime moves like they debut of Chrome have to be made. This is just one more step toward the inevitable demise of windows. Apple and linux though I have no doubt will be able to adapt over time.

@Guabtron - PC games, and I am a PC gamer, are the last real reason to use Windows. Ironic (or stupid) that Microsoft is actively undermining that market with their console/Xbox strategy.

I'm using chrome right now. Everything in the comic strip announcement seems to be checking out. The single process tab arrangement cleans up the memory management problem that has been the bane of browsers for years. Firefox is toast because the techies will migrate -- chrome is just better. And the future is the web.

Windows is still relevant -- it runs the hard drive. But most people's computer time is spent on the web, and that's where the money will be.

Here's another thought - are we working ourselves up when we say browser would make OS obsolete ? Browser is still just a presentation and interaction mode - which is the UX really. It's not the computing/networking/printing/storage/blah horse. Agreed, OSes might be "coming-in-the-way" of streamlined UX, but that doesn't make them irrelevant.

To me it looks like when MS won the consumer war of OS with Windows pushing *unix into enterprise-only segment, google wants to displace IE away from consumers. Has nothing to do with OS. So Sergey and Co should save their misleading statements to work up their employees/OSS zealots really ;)

Olternaut, do you see a particular reason why Apple and Linux would be able to adapt to a "browser" based OS any better than MS could? If it is simply fact that it is browser based, then I think MS has an equal if not better chance given the current install base of IE.

There was a time when E-mail at home was handled by either Outlook, or AOL.
Now (with the exception of corporates) most Mail and IM apps are now available through the Browser
(I'm thinking AIM Express, Facebook Chat etc).

Perhaps Sergey doesn't (even slightly) understand the unreliability of Worldwide Broadband.
When I worked for an Online TV Network that started streaming Original programming content in the late 90s.
Our delusional CEO had us believe that we were going to be the nail in the coffin of the Nation (and the world's) broadcast TV networks.
That company collapsed (in part because of a CEO sex scandal) but also because the infrastructure didn't exist.

I hope this sort of 'yes sir' (believing things in the face of technical/factual indifference) mentality isn't being ingrained at Google HQ.

Also, lets hope MS keeps building something in the form of Windows/Office. Please don't tell me anyone in the valley is gonna be storing sensitive data on Google Servers ;-S

yeah right, this make me laugh. i don't think we're in any danger of google removing the need for a good OS. chrome is not such a big deal from a technology standpoint all the heavy lifting has been done by apple with webkit. and google couldn't even manage a simultaneous release on windows, linux and mac? give me a break. let's see how long chrome stays in beta. for all the "talent" google has a to google they should have been able to deliver something far more compelling than this.

Of course the Operating System as we know it is dyeing... Sun Micro told us it was dead yearss ago, so it must be true. Seriously though it does not take a rocket scientist to understand why we are moving closer to the cloud. Also to understand why the "old guard" will try to keeep us grounded.

Hey, all you sarcastic people are missing Henry's point. Since in a web-world Windows is relegated to running the hard drives in the background, it doesn't really matter. Linux will do the same thing. Developers write to the browser, and the OS becomes a low-level issue the developer doesn't care about. It's already happened, but once the browser becomes a robust (rather than intentionally kneecapped-by-MS) environment, it's going to accelerate to it's logical conclusion: The OS becomes essentially irrelevant. Unsurprisingly, Sergey is right.

I'll believe it when free wireless access becomes universal. Till then we are a ways off.

Gates saw the danger of the thin client (browser) displacing the OS years ago. Why do you think that IE is such an integral part of Windows. Google is just trying to make enough noise for MS to buy them.

So, in the near future Chrome will:
1. Give me high speed graphics for my gaming.
2. Manage my RAID.
3. Make sure my file resources can be shared on my local network but not the internet.
4. Stream my movies and music to other computers in my home or office.
5. Interface directly with my printer/scanner/fax.
6. Edit photos, documents and video.

Now, Chrome may be great and wonderful (I do Mac's so i don't know) but everyone that comes down the pike with a new web app or browser says the PC is dead or dying. Sorry, until you can replace the backend 'glue' (drives, network, printers, etc.) you just looking foolish and blowing smoke.

This may happen in 15-20 years but until it can support high performance applications, vertical market applications or mission critical applications I don't see it.

To say that operating systems are unnecessary in an article about a program which is OS-dependent (only runs on windows, therefore requires the operating system) is, well, dishonest/misguided at best.

The question becomes, when will web apps be able to run complex programs, like videos games. When will cloud computer hardware be sophisticated enough to support what people are currently doing on their desktops? Further, when will the desktop OS dissapear completely and we boot straight to the internet?
