Google's Android GPhone Already a Flop

I've heard it addresses every issue the iPhone has. This is going to get compared to the iPhone, but it's version one on what looks like a crap designed handset. Goog has the right idea and I'll be happy to trade my iPhone 2.5g for Android. I'm sick of Safari crashing, texting and trying to type long emails on a touch screen designed for kid fingers, and the lack of any really decent apps. Seriously. And Tmobile with their pricing can't be beat. And you would have to be dumb to think that their 3g network rollout isn't going to coincide with this launch or shortly thereafter.

if you have a decent browser on your phone. You can get a lot of google mobile products for free. Android is more a GUI play than anything. Google thinks that if people have a better or cleaner GUI it can sell better ads.

Google has the right idea... not enough people are using the mobile Web. If Android can get more people using the mobile Web, it'll help Google toward its goal. (If not, it'll be a huge waste of money.)

But for Android to help, people have to buy Android phones --- which isn't only up to Google. We'll be in a better position to judge the market in a year when more than one phone is out. Don't forget that Sprint, Motorola, foreign carriers, other manufacturers are involved. Sales of one large, bulky phone on an infant T-Mobile 3G network isn't the best barometer for Android's long-term success or failure.

I don't get the constant references Google's stock price. The whole market is down. I don't see any evidence that Google's stock is more depressed than others (or that they even really care).

The phone is about leading innovation, not taking over the market. Google's engine can do just fine with out the phone, but it brings more data to the system, that's all this is about.

Google is after all an ad company. It doesn't want to serve its ads to people who buy one proprietary device. It wants everyone - as is the case in search.
The difference between AAPL and GOOG is that Apple doesn't care what you get up to on your device. Google is ALL about what you get up to on your device.
They (as they do now in search) will dictate where you go and what you do there.

What sort-of creeps me out is with GPS enabled Phones, Google will have a team of Citizen Streetview employees fine-tuning that service(I'm talking addresses etc) and contributing to it. When you're in the car searching for the quickest route with Google Maps, you'll get real-time data on someone who's doing the trip the same time as you, or minutes earlier.
Right now you're calling me a crazy conspiracy theorist, that's cool. But AOL is already trying to do it with the OnStar/Mapquest service.

Assuming all this data that the GOOG collects isn't manipulated, sold-off or stolen this should actually make our lives a whole lot easier. But, I for one am uncomfortable with a phone that's going to say things like "You are passing a 'Dunkin Donuts', yesterday you liked 'Dunkin Donuts'. Turn right in 200 ft if you want some more of that delicious Dunkin Goodness :-S.

At the end of the day, whilst the Media might care if Google doesn't sell Hardware, Google doesn't. The iPhone's running Google Maps (with GPS) and has GApps support.

Since when did Google care if you used a Dell, HP, or Mac?

If a App. developer already has a popular app. for the iphone platform, how hard would it be to write a new program for the Google android?

What makes anyone think that Google has the golden touch regarding technology outside search and advertising? It hasn't released any category killers outside its core, ever. Maps -- nope, Mapquest still has greater market share. Mail -- nope, GMail is still getting beat by Yahoo and Hotmail. Classified advertising -- is Google Base still around? Analytics -- the acquired Urchin product is doing fine in the hobbyist and SMB space, but still isn't a power hitter against the big boys. I wish they'd crack the mobile market, but they're turning into Microsoft except less successful outside the core (at least MS developed a solid enterprise business to complement its OS and Office LOBs).

People may say The Google Android Phone flopped for now, but somehow, someway, it'll bounce back in action against Apple's iPhone...

In terms of email, Yahoo! is 1, Hotmail 2, with Gmail arguably three, but most likely 4. The big stat that you're not looking at there (providing by Hitwise) is email usage. Hotmail and Yahoo continue to trail off and decline year over year with Gmail increasing. Again, these market leaders have been around and have been established for a while.

As for Analytics, GA has about a 60% marketshare, the closest competitor Omniture at 19%.

I understand your point but believe you're taking the numbers for fact. It's important to look at the trends as a predictor of things to come. Again, 6 months from now people will be saying how Google hasn't sold enough handsets compared to the iPhone. That will be true. Hopefully though, the trend will be for increased usage and buyers as time goes on. Time will tell.

@artman1033, it's possible to port programs from one platform to another, but it's not trivial. iPhone applications are written in Objective-C, Android apps in Java, and each platform has its own (different) set of libraries. So you could use an iPhone app basically as a blueprint for an Android app, and it would take less time than starting from scratch, but it would still be a job of work.

So far almost every app that google has come out with is extraordinary, has ton of features and is always thought out well. Who ever thinks that this is a flop they are mistaking. Why do you think they are secrative about this phone. Because they dont want to scare all the big phone companies. People aren't using mobile web because the browsers to date have sucked and the cell providers charge more than people want to pay for data plans.

Android might be able to solve the first problem, but look at all the complaining when AT&T raised its iPhone data plan. It's going to take some time for the providers to realize that the money is in wide adoption, not in milking every cent you can get from a plan. Get people to use it and they will addict themselves.

I believe that any suggestion that Google's Android has flopped is just anti-Google propaganda from scared competitors. First, how can any new product flop apriori unless certain powerful sectors are fearful of its introduction.

Google is a great company which has brought many exciting innovations to the marketplace. Google is making a major move into the wireless space not just through Android but through making major investments in WiMAX ( Clearwire) and supporting WiMAX carriers in France and India. Android and Chrome are just parts of this overall strategy.

We should all welcome a company of deep pockets and a history of innovation building products in the wireless space. Microsoft's offerings are mediocre and Symbian is very primitive. The world as we know it will become device centric as the major populations of consumers use lower cost devices to access the Internet through wireless broadband technologies. They need new ecosystems to support new applications that provide useful functions. This transition to device centricity from PC desktop centricity poses the greatest challenge to the traditional monopolies. Intel understands this and so does Apple.

Google's entrance is truely visionary and enlightened no matter how good the first versions are. They are headed in the right direction.
