Bottom Line: Apple's iPhone Still Beats Google's G1 Android GPhone

|

google-g1-up-close.jpgThere's no shortage of first-look reviews of Google's (GOOG) new Android "G1" GPhone today, so now that we've played with one ourselves, we'll cut to the chase: Google's first effort at a mobile phone is a good one, but Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 3G is still the high-end smartphone to beat.

Why? Google's G1 is great for programmers, geeks, and open-source lovers who want to be able to do science projects with their phone. It's priced roughly equivalently to the iPhone. (G1/T-Mobile: $179 plus minimum monthly data plan of $25; iPhone/AT&T $199/$30.) And perhaps someday it'll be great for the rest of us who just want to be able to make phone calls, surf the Web, play games, listen to music, and chat. But right now, Apple still has an edge. Why?

  • More polished, intuitive user interface. Google's Android OS is powerful and looks attractive, but it's a bit too Windows-like. Apple's iPhone user interface is simpler, cleaner, and just makes more sense.
  • We're spoiled by multi-touch. We tried "pinching" Google Maps to zoom out on Google's own phone, and were shot down. It'd be easy for Apple to add Street View maps -- very slick on the G1 -- to their Maps app with a software update; but HTC and Google simply can't have multi-touch on this phone.
  • The G1's keyboard is nice, but what are you really going to be typing on a phone? (Especially one that can't access Exchange/BlackBerry email accounts.) Is it worth making the phone almost twice as thick as the iPhone? Maybe not.
  • Apple's App Store is a year ahead of Google's. We're surprised by how many apps we've downloaded, especially professionally produced games, and how much time we spend using them. At Google's launch event today, we heard about two geeky apps for the G1, but nothing about partnerships with Electronic Arts or other big gaming shops. Google's Android App Store will be sparse at the beginning, and will take a while to fill out.
  • Syncing the iPhone to your computer is a breeze. Music comes from iTunes, photos from iPhoto, etc. Google won't have an iTunes-like desktop syncing app, and instead will sync up with Google's various Internet-based services. We still don't know how we'll be able to move music from our computer to our phone, but we're betting it won't be nearly as simple and seamless as Apple's made it.
  • We're not nearly as hung up about stats as some of our blogging brethren. But Google's G1 comes with a tiny percentage of the memory -- 1 GB -- that Apple's iPhone comes with -- 8 GB. Sure, you can buy an 8-gig card for $50, but there goes any cost savings over the iPhone.

Nothing against Google: The G1 is a fine phone, and we see a potentially bright future for Android. But so far, our money's still with Apple.

Bonus: Video of the G1's free Pac-Man game.

Google device works without a computer. It just doesn't need one. All your data is online. All syncing is done in the background. Phone book with presence! It's a miracle.

And huge bonus - compare that to apple device that *needs* itunes to start making calls!

Are you really on apple's payrol or just a stupid fauboy?

Crammy, the problem is that not all my data is online. My movies are on my computer. My music is on my computer. My contacts are on my computer, because I use them with my computer. Over-the-air syncing is nice, but not as complete as I'd like.

crammy, using Exchange or MobileMe, all your syncing is done in the background and everything does sit online when you use the iPhone. Google has no advantage here.

So Dan why can't you put your music and movies on a flash card and put that into the phone? Does Mac not allow you to do that?

Mo, I can. But that's hardly as elegant. Might as well stick me with Sony SonicStage.

I won't be able to judge without putting my hands on it, but I do not agree.

So far G1 sound more or less like an improved windows mobile phone. Which is not bad for a version one.

G1 is definitely not sexy, at least not as sexy as iphone.

Is iphone the reference cell phone? No, maybe N95, maybe not, but surely not iphone.

Iphone is sexier, sexier UI, and probably has the best cell web browser.
But is far from perfect, as we know well.

So none of them it's a winner yet. Still both challenger.

So the market is interesting, hot exciting stuff is on it's way, let's keep our eyes open and see what's coming.

I think google is hardly any thing to worry about it. incase you forgot. the government themselves tired to get google to release all of their data so they could spy on us some more. and google told them to go to hell. so as far as im concerned, google can know all my deepest darkest secrets. but I wouldn't be in the least bit worried about that. not that I have any deep dark secrets any way. but then again im not the shy type any way

You take having to use iTunes to sync as a positive? Anything is better than iTunes- it's the #1 reason I don't use my iPod touch that often and haven't updated it. For those of us who don't use iTunes as our regular music player, it's a massive negative, not a positive. (Note that I've heard that iTunes is a wonderful thing of beauty on Macs- unfortunately I use Windows)

Trust? You trust Google? Google is a for-profit company, not a next door neighbor! Google is not your friend anymore than Microsoft or Apple. If it came down to spewing every intimate detail amongst your "deep dark secrets" or going out of business, you'd better believe Google would sell your info to the highest bidder. And there's be a legion of fanboys supporting them with chants of "a company's only focus is to make money." As for what Google says when the government tries to get your info--- well that's what gag-orders are for. If the government wants your info and doesn't want you to know about... they will... and you won't.

I'm refraining from taking sides right now - but not having a real computer is a big plus, for folks in 3rd world countries. Low income people in those regions rely on their phone *as* their computer, and they will probably never be able to afford a real computer. The mobile device is the closest taste of the internet they will probably ever get.

Granted in America, not so much a big deal because everybody practically has a computer with high speed net at home.

Just wanted to make a point that not needing a computer to sync - is key, to read the bottom few billion people.

Hi iPhones idiots! Hands up if you can copy and paste on your cell phone? Awwwww....

Do you guys want to pay a simple app you could program yourself for free, because iTunes wants a cut of you using a piece of hardware that you own?

Open source phone = Do anything with your hardware. Program it to do whatever you can imagine, within the confines of the hardware itself.

I program mobile cryptographic OTP applications and I am so sick of the crap lockdown on cell phones. Just get a phone from some honest people who believe that if you own it then it is yours to experiment with.

DRM is fucktarded, by the way. Independent artists cannot get their music out there because there is nothing that will play their mp3s. Fuck off iTunes.

LOL WUT?

Cuz no one sends text messages, or writes emails from their hotmail/gmail/yahoo online POP 3 account, or sets calendar dates, or searches the internet, or GOD YOU'RE STUPID.

And the iPhone is not sexy. I played with a friend's and had to wipe all the grease from his fingers and head off the thing (which just streaked instead of coming off), dropped it once because it slipped out of my hand, couldn't type on the thing for shit, and it's too damn tall and wide.

I don't think the G1 is sexy, either, and the 1GB limit from T-Mobile is a deal-crusher. So I'll stick with my BB Pearl, which I hate, until someone comes along with something else.

Guys, you're arguing from different perspectives.

The iphone is for regular civilians who know nothing about functionality of a phone, they just want a sexy looking toy to play with.

The G1 is for people who want to get more out of their phone. But I'm kind of dissapointed that it lacks a few features.

In the end, the Nokia N95 is still the best phone in the world. With Symbian being a stable interface, a camera 5.0 that RECORDs VIDEOS, and GPS integrated and an 8gb internal memory, what more do I need?

If I was Google, I would have made the phone sexier, bigger screen, more memory, because that's all these American people want, is a sex toy they can lick and make love to...but in the end, they can't even copy/paste numbers or messages or send an MMS.

All these phones target different audiences.

In the end, the N95 has the best functionality you can ever get with a phone.

I'm buying this phone on 10/22. I've tried the iPhone and absolutely hate that it doesn't have a real keyboard. I have a sidekick 3 now and am looking forward to the G1. I love Google, it works well and I like the idea that it's kind of like a mini laptop on the go. Who cares if it's ugly. I don't wear my phone on a chain on my neck. People forget that when the iPhone first came out, it was thick too. But at least the G1 has a keyboard. I was thinking about going with the BB Curve @ Sprint, but the second I heard the release date for the Google phone, I ditched any idea of going w/ Sprint. :)

i think it's interesting that you can just have multiple 8 gig cards for the G1 and just swap when you like. iPhone really is limited to the capacity you purchase it for.

This phone's biggest problem is the data cap I think.

G1 has a keyboard. G1 Wins. period. end. done. QED.

If you spend your time with doo dads, constant SMS/MMS and looking at myspace, iphone is for you.

If you type emails because you are working with people via email, then blackberry and now G1 are probably going to 'take over.'

I've used the iphone. Its a replacement for a garmin with a kick butt browser, but it sucks hard on battery life (blackberry lasts forever and works very well internationally), but for "doing business" rather than looking cool, blackberry and now the G1 are the not-toys category.

the vendor lock-in bull that apple pulls with software on the iphone is annoying.

This has to be one of the worst comparisons I've ever read...

First off, you state that the simplicity of the iTunes connection is a win for apple. How?? In this comparison you have two phones that you plug into a cable then into your computer. With the G1, you would then simply drag whatever you want into the phone. With the iPhone, you then have to launch iTunes, make sure your files work in your precious apple products and that apple approves their use with the toy you paid for and then sync it. You also state that apple wins on storage... So explain to me how you go to a store and you get one chance to choose how much storage you want on the iPhone, purchase it and that's it you can never ever change it without paying another $200+. An 8gb card for the G1 (and many many other phones...) costs $25, not 50. Also the G1 has been approved for use with the new 16gb cards that are going to be released soon. Personally I would not buy the 16gb cards as they are way too much on launch, but the 8's are a bargain and you can get as many as you need.

Your other main selling point is the apps... Apple's app store is crap. It's a black hole, people submit and then it's the waiting game. It's not open and people can only create what they are allowed to. How is that better than an open market? This applies to every level of the G1. What if you don't like the iPhone's interface that you so greatly applaud? Guess what, you're stuck with it. If you don't like any part of the G1 you can replace it. Yes that would even mean down to directly cloning the iPhone. Your blind fanboy attitude is stopping you from keeping an open mind. Google has had the ADC going for about a year now and it just closed with the creation of a library of apps for the G1, many of which are extremely useful and apple has nothing like them. Could I take an iPhone into a store, scan the barcode on any item and get an immediate list of where I can find it cheapest, either on the web or locally using the built in gps? No, no I can't...

The main key point you are missing is the extreme flexibility of the G1 compared to the locked down iPhone. You are so used to the iPhone that the "what you see is what you get" mentality is stopping you from realizing this is a phone that can grow for what YOU need and not just the status quo. Do a search for 'android developer challenge' and take a look at what the community has created BEFORE the phone was even announced and you can see how that aspect easily trumps apple's closed door policy. http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/

The media needs to stop using single items as the status quo and rate them on their own merits. I lose respect for a review when they keep kissing the a** of a product that's been out to review something on the way...

Brian K (URL) said:
Lots of good points in this article. I have to say I recently ordered the G1 in the early release armed with the knowledge of the pros and cons. One thing missing from all the arguments on the pros and cons of each phone and why to buy one over the other is the AT&T vs T-Mobile discussion. At home I am a Mac user and love Apple products. Naturally one would think I would buy the iPhone but nope.

AT&T is a disaster to do business with. 6 years ago I used them as my carrier and after a few years of abuse, double billing, mistakes on billing (one bill was 2k and later was determined it should have been 200 bucks) Because the iPhone is only available on AT&T this is a non-option for me... so sad.. I am happy another provider has released another phone that can be looked at as a competitor. I think the G1 will continue to get better and 3rd party apps will hopefully support things like exchange (email) and other enterprise features.

People are getting personal over a tech review? I've often found these 'anti apple fanboy' people have often never used a Mac, or just cant afford one. Either way- thats off topic, and no need for people who don't use mac to get personal with people who DO like macs.

Either way, bottom line is Google develops amazing products, and I do not doubt that this is one of them. I agree with the comparison that googles software is more often 'windows-ish'.

Let's get down to the gritty sales and marketing. At basic instinct, the G1 looks like a fishing GPS unit. It's super ugly, and the specs on weight and size are awful and not very ground breaking. Hopefully google will fire their product designer.

Google is not a trendy company. Google will gain a good percentage of market by turning sales at slashdot junkies and googler wanna be's.

I really appreciate the idea behind Android. It's just not upto Apple standards, and no one seems to have taken the time to think out design patterns as much as Apple has.

If google does that - Apple needs to watch out. But until then, ill tell you every trendy, nerdy, geeky, young, and old will be buying up the super friendly usable intuitive iPhone.

My sister just got her G1, it looks nice.

The fact that it does not support email, contacts, calendar for exchange is a complete deal killer for most people buying this phone for business use.

I am as far as you get from an "apple fan", (I hate their computers, ipods, and CRAPPY itunes)... but... they did a good job on the iphone. It is simple to do the main 3 things I use a phone for.
-Phone
-Email (company email running exchange )
-Internet

I think the G1 destroys the sidekick.

I actually really like the HTC 8925. Put SPB mobile shell 2 on there and you can carry out most tasks in minimal time/effort. one to two touches gets you anywhere on the phone.
I sold my 8925 to buy an iphone after my brother bought one and asked me to set it up with the exchange server. I realized how nice viewing pdf files in emails was compaired to WM. The zooming with gestures is a bigger advantage than i thought.

the G1 looks like a HYBRID 8925/iphone/bb pearl
its got a little of each squished into one.

Your article is way off. There's one simple reason why the G1 beats the iPhone hands down; Android is open source and developers can build and implement every single feature iPhone has and more. The iPhone's OS is a closed system and therefore innovation and developer creativity is confined and restricted.

You can't change out the battery on the iphone and you can't change out the flash memory. Iphone is a money-sink. AT&T sucks ass as well. Multi-touch would've been nice on the G1. Maybe it'll happen on the G2. Best of all, Android is open source. Qwerty keyboard is great. G1 will have virtual one soon too. G1 is plug-n-play. Don't need no stinkin Itunes! I can also sync Outlook to Gmail and updates automatically OTA. I almost bought the Iphone for my gf. But after playing with it, we were not impressed. Now she wants the G1 in white. Did I mention open source? Nuff said.
