YouTube At The Olympics: Exclusive Video You Can't Watch
UPDATE: Watch the Olympics live here
YouTube will get its hands on official Olympics video after all -- but none you'll be able to watch in the United States.
The International Olympics Committee announced today that Google's video site will stream about three hours a day of exclusive content -- summaries and highlights -- from Olympic Broadcasting Services on a dedicated channel, the Wall Street Journal reports. YouTube can sell ads around the content, but only to Olympic sponsors.
It'll be available in some 77 territories that aren't covered by Olympic sponsors, including South Korea and India. But it won't be available in the U.S. -- NBC has exclusive online rights, so YouTube's channel will be blocked here.
Meanwhile, there's already plenty of "unofficial" Olympics video on YouTube that you can watch here. Like this illegally uploaded ESPN clip of yesterday's Team USA victory over Russia, which has been watched more than 50,000 times. As part of YouTube's new deal, it will "conscientiously" filter out Olympics content, removing even cellphone video uploaded by spectators. We'll see how that goes.

Talk about a missed opportunity. Why aren't there Olympic sponsors in South Korea or India? Seems like these markets-especially South Korea--would be ripe for commercialization of the Olympics.
This is lame. I'll make sure to avoid watching NBC and buying products from companies who sponsored the Olympics.
Looks to me like NBC should be tested for doping -- they're all on drugs.
I don't understand why these games have to be for financial gain. Sure Beijing might make some money off it, but more importantly they get to showcase their country and culture -- which is shared among various countries every four years anyway. And Beijing is really giving the all to make it a spectacular event despite the cost.
If NBC has been granted rights on this event, it absolutely shouldn't be for financial gain or a place for advertising, instead I think they should pay to be the sole provider, otherwise let every country's broadcasting have access to equally (I mean via a central Olympics clearinghouse for videos/coverage otherwise it would be a logistics nightmare).
good job!
