Toast: Tech's Forgotten Brands

|

commodore.jpgThe nature of technology means that today's cutting-edge gadget or service is often tomorrow's old news. So it's easy for once-mighty tech brands to get left behind, whether because they're displaced by better technology, or because the marketing department decided it was time for something new.

We've highlighted 25 tech brands that were either huge hits or had huge hype over the last 25 years or so -- brands that you're far less likely to be using today. Click on each brand for a mini-profile -- what they meant at their prime, and what they're up to now -- or scroll through the list beginning here (use the scroll keys to the right of the text, under the "Tech's Forgotten Brands" graphic).

Ummm why is Divx on this list? Their technology is still pretty widely used on every bootleg/3rd party illegal movie site out there. Get with the times

John M said:
I suspect the Divx on this list refers to the ill-fated circuit-city-backed DVD-competitor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIVX_(Digital_Video_Express)

John M, you are correct. The entry explains the difference.

All my friends are knocking down my door, to play my commodore 64! Seriously though, jumpman was the best.

Impossible to have a proper list without putting one of the largest failures ever: broadcast.com

I just remembered another one of my favorite failures -- PointCast. Remember "push" technology? And how network admins hated them?

Harry Thatchsquatch said:
How about BushPusher 2000? There's some "push" technology for you. There still isn't anything like it.

Ethan said:
PointCast should probably come ahead of others on this list. CueCat was a laughingstock from its inception...

Dan, nice idea for a series of posts, but I'm guessing you didn't spend too much time on this. Clicking over to some of these brand pages leads to barely one sentence about the subject and one image found on the web. How about a little more detailed writeups of why these businesses failed, etc. How about a mention of Iomega's famous "click of death."

I mean this in the best possible way, but I like SAI because you choose interesting stuff to write about. But very often I am disappointed at the effort after I click through. Come on guys. Put a little more work into it. Are there editors not asking this of you? I mention this because I've noticed at a lot of content plays (pro-blogs) that content is designed for search engine optimization - to be able to have a page link that ends in /Atari for example - but has negligible content and adds nothing to what is already out there.

So thanks for the trip down memory lane. It's a great idea. But please fill it out a little. Otherwise the web will be filled with these pointless low-effort pages.

JLHayes said:
I know you could do an entire list of search engines, butwhat about excite.com? Mother? Etc.

Or even a list of former giants that are shadows of themselves like Sierra.

@Ad Guy: Thanks for the feedback. Will add click of death -- that's a good one.

@JLHayes: Yep, Excite made the short list but not the final list, mostly because of time constraint.

Andrew Baron (URL) said:
Perhaps controversial, but I would suggest that America Online belongs on that list.

Mitch said:
Agreed with @Ad Guy that this post isn't that well structured (but still typical).

This should have been one giant post a la Neatorama, with one graf on each of the 25 entries. Split it up onto a couple pages to increase clicks, fine. Poor execution on what is a super-fun topic otherwise.

Billy Bob Newton said:
I'd add Q-Link as well. AOL is NOT the same thing.

Ted T. said:
The CueCat's business model was a joke from day one, but the device itself (a barcode reader) is supremely useful. I have one (gotten from Radio Shack) and use it regularly to this day.

A whole category of media cataloging software like DVD/CD/BookPedia, ReaderWare, etc. probably never would have made it into existence without an unlimited supply of free CueCats floating around.

Clyde McPhat said:
I remember an article in the New Yorker where a media company was going to buy PointCast for 450-500 million dollars and by the time the discussion had gotten to the point of an offer, it had cratered.

Also, I looked up Cuban's internet thing....we were a couple of months away from NEVER having to read his stupid blog. Yahoo paid 5 BILLION for it....how broadcast.com doesnt make the list...Dan, c'mon explain that one for me?

stone said:
Agree that Broadcast.com is a major stinker!

MiddleMarketMillionaire said:
I thoroughly enjoyed this bit of nostalgia - much appreciated!

Ahh, I remember Battle Chess on my parent's $5k Tandy.

Look for this list in the forthcoming Wired.

I still have my old school Commodore c-16 with the brown keyword and grey keys. The c-16 has a slot in the back to plug in a cartridge and an outlet in the back and I think on the side too to plug in the tape recorder. I had it since I was 6 or 7 and I'm now in my .......lol

Re: Broadcast.com -- Good point. Though this wasn't supposed to be a "most overhyped" or "biggest busts" list -- some of these overlap. The goal was to build a list of once-royal brands that are now all but extinct. I guess some like eToys and CueCat didn't fit that mold. At any rate, a few dozen more great brands could go on this list. Thanks for all your great suggestions. We'll try to figure out how to make this something with more longevity than just a few days.

You forgot LookSmart.

Oh, man! The modem companies put on HUGE COMDEX parties in Vegas. A lot of history compressed in a Moore's Law ratio.

Pwned indeed!

Mike said:
I can't help but thinking google will be on this list 10 years from now or so. We will just frown over their eternal beta products without a business model and make jokes about their phoney names: googleplex, googly and googler.

Say, you are dressed googly today. lol

The Forgotten Web Property is Not Forgotten by All

I read with some surprise your inclusion of Lycos among the top 25 forgotten brands. On the heals of the recent news blitz surrounding Google's 10-year anniversary, I'd like to remind folks that Internet pioneers like Lycos are still very much alive and still visited by millions of web users each month.
Lycos consistently averages 12 - 15 million monthly unique visitors in the U.S., and is a top 25 Internet destination worldwide, reaching nearly 60 million unique visitors globally. Each day, millions of people visit the Lycos Network of sites to access our award-winning products and services including tools for video viewing and sharing, social networking, blogging, web publishing and hosting, online games, e-mail, and search.

While other Internet brands have come and gone, Lycos continues to build on our heritage, introducing first to market technologies and looking forward to our next 10 years of innovation and growth. At age 13, and nearly 60 million uniques strong, Lycos is hardly forgotten. So from the original search engine, and one of the oldest web properties in the world, Lycos wishes Google a very happy 10th birthday.

most these nubs reading here were in Middle School when 1.0 was going on.

i was hustling options at Robertson, putting out IPOs and sleeping under my desk in $1500 suits. hi5.

where were the rest of you all in 97-98? if you say soccer practice or gluing macaroni to paper plates- i won't laugh.
