NBC Olympics: We Don't Care If You Hate Us, You're Watching USA-China Basketball On Tape Delay

|

michaelphelpswins400.jpgNBC actually showed Michael Phelps live on the east coast last night as he shattered his own world record in the 400 IM. We watched--and, suddenly, the Olympics were as awesome as, well, the Olympics. If you live on the west coast, of course, thanks to another absurd decision by NBC, you only got to watch the race after reading about Phelps' victory online, when it was about as exciting as 1970s Superbowls.

(And as if this weren't enough, NBC is doing the same thing this morning, with USA-China basketball).

Why is NBC making decisions guaranteed to alienate and outrage much of the country? Money, of course. The network apparently believes it stands a better chance of earning back its $894 milllion plus programming costs if it infuriates viewers across the country.

And maybe the network is right. But it's still a dumb decision.

Sponsors don't benefit when fans are tuning in to see HOW Michael Phelps won rather than IF HE WINS. They don't benefit when viewers are cursing the network and throwing imaginary fruit at the TV. They don't benefit when the country develops a collective loathing for the network that lasts far longer than the two-week games.

And we also have a sneaking suspicion that the network is wrong. Especially on the weekend, we think rabid sports fans would tune in to see live events any hour of the day or night--and that not-so-rapid Olympics enthusiasts would then also tune in to watch NBC's packaged garbage highlights broadcast in prime time. In other words, we actually doubt that broadcasting events live would hurt NBC's total viewership.

The other way to handle it, of course, would be to broadcast all events live online--with commercials. As good as NBC's streaming is, it's still a far cry from high-def TV. Even if millions of people tuned in online, the TV audience would barely be affected. In fact, lots of folks who watched a beetle-sized Phelps fly to victory on their PC screens would probably watch again in the evening just to see it on TV. NBC's total audience, in other words, might even be bigger.

As NBC tells America every chance it gets, it has locked up Olympics rights into the hereafter. This is a bummer: Now, no other network can show the country how it should be done. We can only hope/pray that, four years from now, NBC has finally learned its lesson and broadcasts the games live.

One of the nice things about living in Seattle is that we get the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on our basic cable system (channel 1). More Olympics at more times of the day, including Phelps live last night at 7 pm and USA-China hoops this morning at 7:15. (West Coast time of course).

Schedule's here:

Not showing Phelps live last night on the west coast was totally indefensible. It's one thing to tape delay if it would be on at 3 in the morning (although I would still personally disagree with it). But this would have been live in prime time and they still tape delayed it!! I couldn't quite put my finger on why I have been totally unexcited about the Olympics this year and not even trying to watch. Now I've figured it out!

Luckily, on DirecTV, you can get the live feed of the basketball game on the West Coast via the NBC Basketball channel. And to prove Henry's point, I am up watching the game right now.

And, again, NBC isn't showing any swimming on the Web, period, which ensures that it won't get a penny from people who actually care about the event.

Luckily I live on the east coast. Though that sucks for you west coast people. I say all the broadcasting companies should compete openly to broadcast the games every four years. The network that provides the best plan of covering the games gets the prize. None of this whoever supplies the ICO with the most money gets the broadcasting rights.

Aw, somebody's all butt-hurt that they got a cease-and-desist order about a Web link and now feels the need to lash out at NBC. Isn't that precious.

Growing up in the Netherlands, I always imagined what it would be like to watch an event like the Olympics in the US. With so much money being paid, surely the games must be on 24/7, with all the latest technical innovations to ensure the best possible viewing experience.

After moving to Canada, I realized the opposite is the case. In the Netherlands, everything is broadcast live. If a Dutch medal contender is racing at 3am, the country will be awake and watch. And even if no Dutch athletes compete, people still watch the games at all hours of the day and night..live.

We have a culture that if you don't watch live, you're missing all the drama suspense. Having seen it live is a bragging right.

To not broadcast live and use an event like Phelps' first medal race as a way to keep people watching TV during prime time, like Entertainment Tonight saves the juiciest celebrity new until the end of their show is insane to a Dutch person like myself. This is the 21st century.

Glad Canada thinks more like the Dutch.

Forgot to mention that I'm not actually watching the Olympics this year because of this complete bs delay policy. The NBC execs making these decisions must all be over 55. That is the only demographic they're going to be left with.

rizchamps said:
As symbolic as the Olympics itself, NBC's lame and desperate hold on broadcasting rights only proves how out of touch its top decision maker. Technology will bring it down big time. If not this time, in 4 years, NBC will make itself a biz school case of not changing with time.

I think you meant to say that they're not showing any *live* coverage of swimming on the Web.

When I launch the video player on NBCOlympics.com, and I click on "Olympic Sports" in the left-hand navigation, then I click "Swimming" I see what looks like lots of swimming coverage, including Phelps winning the gold in the 400M.

Disclosure: I work at Schematic, the firm that designed and built the NBC Olympics video player.

Thanks for the clarification, Matthew. By the way, the video the player does have? That works great.

But getting this result when you click on the "swimming" schedule --

The 2008 Olympic swimming competition can be viewed on the networks of NBC Universal, with extensive coverage in Primetime on NBC. For complete TV listings for swimming, click here. For additional swimming video, including highlights and long-form replays, click here.

-- conveys a clear message: NBC would you prefer you not watch on the Web.

"NBC,

I just watched the 400 x 100m freestyle relay..........it was one of the most amazing moments in US swimming history.......only one problem. I am on the west coast and I already knew how the race ended.

You got to be kidding me NBC........you ruined probably one of the most memorable moments of these Olympics because you decided to show it to 1/3rd of the country on tape delay.

I had seen the results on at least three websites prior to your broadcast for the West coast. It is inevitable that the information will be all over the internet prior to your 3 hour delay.

Please show everything live like you do for the rest of the country.

Help me with this . . . how is it that the U.S. gets to send PRO athletes (NBA players) to the Olympics? When did this start and why? This seems so wrong. Don't we have AMATEUR athletes who would love to (and deserve to) play? Aren't the NBA players we send making MILLIONS $$$$$$? I just don't get it. SM

NBC has multiple networks they could have put live feeds on, Universal HD, MSNBC, CNBC, etc.

Instead they decided to "fool" us into believing the feeds are live on the West [YES, it was still stamped "LIVE" on the tape delayed events].

What a crock of dung. ON top of that to put the online streaming on Silverlight via MSNBC and *NOT* on Hulu [which has much better quality] in inexcusable.

Those defending NBC, wake up... I can go ANYWHERE outside the US right now and get a live feed of key olympic events. Why in the center of the media world are we treated as second class citizens.

If anything the IOC is to blame for selling the rights but not stipulating mandatory use requirements. Wake up, there is more than enough upstream capacity for ANY network to feed their events live from Beijing.

Since I can't get legit feeds, I'm using a proxies to get to local content in other countries.... Sad that I must do this to get what NBC is recording for us but believes we want to see it at a more convenient time.

I can't see ANY Olympics - live on broadcast, streaming internet, OR our local cable (local cable will show it TWO days later) given that I live only 2hrs time zone away from Beijing near Guam, this stinks! NBC will NOT allow me to watch their Online events - not even the events already taped - in my location.

I would gladly watch ANY olympics with NBC Commercials. Instead I am cursing NBC for their complete monopoly and ruination of what could be great programming.

NBC has ruined the Olympic watching experience for me and many of my friends on the west coast. The excitement isn't quite there -- I have to purposely avoid Twitter, ESPN.com (where I check on baseball stats), and news websites. It's absurd that I have to do this. And I've failed. Both days, I tried NOT to view the results, but that means basically turning most of my communication outlets. They might be making tons of money, but they do have some pretty bitter loyal fans.

Matt Roush said:
No, there is another network showing NBC how to do this all better. I live in Detroit and we're lucky to see the games on CBC, the Canadian network. Its coverage is vastly superior to NBC's time-shifted treacle. No HD, though, alas.

john peter said:
Truly ridiculous to delay one of the biggest events in Olympic history. As bad, is that NBC insists on NEVER displaying any given racing event on screen while the event is happening. THIS IS LIKE NOT SHOWING WHAT INNING A BASEBALL GAME IS IN, OR WHAT QUARTER A FOOTBALL OR BASKETBALL GAME IS IN. In either track or swimming what makes a racing event exciting is knowing which particular event is being watched - you know, how many meters the athlete must swim or run. Otherwise you're simply watching people swim or run just to swim or run - having no idea what competition is being raced. By missing the opening announcer telling me (in a split second) which race is being raced, I'm screwed for the next three to 12 minutes depending on what race is being raced. If I'm watching a 100M freestyle swimming or a 400m track event, I want to know this WHILE I'M WATCHING THE EVENT- furthermore the World and Olympic Record times DURING the event should be posted for at least the last 30 seconds of any race, allowing the viewer the excitement and anticipation of a potential record being broken (the producers instead flash the world and Olympic record times up every 50 meters or or so, for two seconds, so fast I can't track it). ABC got this right in 1972 for God's sake!, the producers at NBC absolutely do not get it. Sports Television Production's first rule is to make the sport being covered exciting and understandable for the audience first- to make the viewer feel like they are as close to being at the event as possible. Can you imagine being in a track stadium or indoor swimming event and NOT HAVE THE PARTICULAR EVENT BEING RACED POSTED FOR THE AUDIENCE IN THE STADIUM TO SEE!!!??? Not to mention the millions of people watching all over the world in bars and restaurants without sound- so bad! NBC, YOUR PRODUCERS ARE SHORT SIGHTED AND TERRIBLE- MAKE THE OLYMPICS MORE ENJOYABLE AND FIGURE OUT THE SIMPLE STUFF!!!

i know this is mad late, but amidst all this nbc bashing, i noticed that steven questioned why the US is sending professional basketball players to the olympics. uh, steven, every country sends professional basketball athletes (at least the ones with professional leagues, which is much of Europe and Asia). also, the US didn't even win the gold in the last olympics even though they sent a bunch of nba players. just fyi.

Check this out. I just Google’d "NBC tape delay". NBC’s own message board site came up as a top listing. So I click on it. The funniest thing is that it says the comments had been deleted or there was an error reading it. But Google had already cached the main comment about people’s disgust about the delay on their own site. Hilarious censorship NBC. Can’t take your own backlash from you own decision. No wonder your ratings are down and you wasted A LOT of money. And stop saying it is Live when it is not. False advertisement there.

I watched the entire opening ceremonies live from CCTV, and enjoyed every second. Here in Oregon, the webcast was 4am to 9am last Friday.

I would dearly love to see live broadcasts of all events, doesn't matter what time they show. NBC can rebraodcast the big events during primetime on one of the 4 channels they are using.

Finally, I just want to add, regarding the women's gymnastic team finals, shame on the NBC ommentators for all sounding so crushed and somber because our girls took Silver. Silver! amazing, a cause for celebration, what an achievement, and Alicia Sacramone helped get us there. To be so downcast, when the olympics have never been more glorious, is whack. The Chinese womens team was a joy to watch as well.

I have not been able to watch the Olympics at all during this time; previously, 'cause the Internet was too new and the countries I lived in weren't broadcasting the Olympics. Now, though, the Internet is well up and running and yet, NBC says I can't watch their broadcasting 'cause I don't live in the U.S.!!!!! Just 'cause I don't live in the U.S. doesn't make me any less of an American and proud to be able to watch my fellow Americans win or just even compete in the Olympics. NBC sure doesn't get my vote for anything!!!!!

NBC is terrible. I have personally been upset with their lack of baseball coverage. Now to find out that west coast viewers are seeing tape delays when the east coast seees certain events live is ridiculous. Baseball is Americas pastime, and very popular in asian countries. I understand that not everyone, including baseball fans, gets fired up about the Olympic version of the game, but geez. The exciting opening round game was not shown live(instead, a "very interesting" beach volleyball matchup between Georgia and Russia-I thought the Olympics were about putting politics aside, not hyping an event around a war, the second game involved the only college kid on the team throwing a no hitter through 6 innnings but NBC was more concerned with the softball rain delay, and the third game was against Cuba. What was NBC showing during the Cuba game? 2 out of 3 channels had beach volleyball. I love women just as much as the next guy, but I have seen enough beach volleyball and softball for a lifetime. The softball competition is a joke, nobody is even close to the USA, and for that reason I take the un-american approach of rooting against them. Yet every single pitch is shown live as if it is the most important event in the world. The amount of airtime that female sports in which minimal attire is worn is borderline absurd.

NBC sucks said:
I hope that by the next Olympics technology will have advanced to the point that viewers can choose what event they want to watch and when they want to watch it via their remote control. I thought it was bad in 1996 when the Mag 7 won team gold in womens gymnastics in the afternoon and the entire country knew it, but had to wait until the "primetime" broadcast to see it. One of the things I like about the Olympics is the time difference, seeing random sports at random times of day is fun for the sports enthusiasts. However, NBC has monoplized the enitre experience to the point that the opening ceremonies were shown 12 hours after they had actually happened. I would think anyone so dedicated to the Olympics that they would clear their friday night to watch the ceremonies would have no problem adjusting their schedules to watch the event live in the morning. Ratings, commercials, sponsorships....it all comes down to the almighty dollar. This time around they brag about the "live" primetime telecasts, i.e. Boring tape delays until 10 pm eastern time. That's just great for all of the young ladies who had to stay up until 1 am to see the women's all around gymnastics final. Why didn't they just tape delay it and show it Friday night at 8 pm? Oh yeah, that's right, friday nights are great for viewer ratings...I wonder if that means Michael Phelps race tomorrow night will be postponed until a better time slot for NBC's convenience. If they could, I bet you they would...

i really don't care if they show events as they happen. what i do care about is the quality of the events they are showing. for ONE beach volleyball (especially men's, who doesn't like watching attractive women bouncing up & down) is too many. the men's beach volleyball players are obnoxious. the beast of beijing more like the a__hole. and nbc's olympics on the go keeps sending me the same event over & over. Where's handball oh i forgot the usa doesn't have a team so that sport can't be any good. many of the commentators are bad and mr. pomposity bob costas is always a minus, oh the ratings are good. but only because the current generation of gerbils loves being told what they like.

I was upset by the decision makers in China who presented what they thought was a 'better face' to the world, not showing the girl who actually sang at the opening ceremony and shaming her in front of the entire world. but nbc, you take Gold in the 'stomp on the individual' event. the disrespect you showed this morning to millions of Americans by not having a live telecast of the marquee event of the Games, just so you could get better ratings by showing it TWELVE HOURS later in prime time... absolutely disgusting. To add insult to our injury, they then spent God knows what resources busily yanking clips of the race that were being published on youtube... Tell me Bob Costas, what Olympic, democratic, or American spirit does nbc exemplify? America should boycott this tyrannical network. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, watch it here http://www.videosports2008.blogspot.com/ and let nbc calculate its revenue in peace.

NBC is in a tough spot here in the west coast. If it aired events live that were happening on the east coast at 8 eastern, 5 pacific, many viewers would miss out on the events, as it takes an hour in most places to get home from work due to the traffic mess that is LA. Sure, during the World Series and such games can start early here on the west coast, and viewers may miss a part of the telecast, but still catch the majority of it. With Olympic events, most are only a couple minutes in duration, especially the swimming events, so starting at 5 here on the west coast would mean missing out on the entire event. I'm surprised so many people are complaining anyways - in this day and age of digital TV, I have access to east coast NBC affiliates, so I do get to watch events live when I am able to.

Kevin, that may be the case, but those people can record the events using a DVR or, if they are still stuck in the 90s, a VCR. Those of us that would prefer to watch the events live and will be able to do so should not be forced to watch them on a 3-hour delay, ineveitably seeing the results all over the Internet beforehand, so that west coast commuters can watch the events when they get home.

And now, they're delaying the gymnastics broadcast by over 12 hours!! It's already all over the Internet that Shawn Johnson won gold on the beam. That's like knowing the final score of the Superbowl before watching the game. It ruins it completely.

Please, NBC, listen to all of the feedback you are getting and broadcast the events LIVE in 2012. And please get that ridiculous "Live" out of the corner of my screen when you're showing it to me 3 hours or more later than when it was actually live. You're lying to us thinking we're stupid and will just eat it up, but instead you are just insulting the viewers.

well maybe I'm being rash.

I can't really blame you for the worst coverage of the Olympic games I have ever seen in my entire life. It is only fair that the broadcast rights go to the highest bidder, Even if they are inept, money hungry, moronic, scumbags.

The Olympics have been ruined for Americans and all the Athletes, except of course swimmers, gymnasts, basketball and vollyball players. Oh, and of course the stars of the Olympics, the Boxers. No offense to Boxers, but I think some of the time covering boxing could have been wisely allocated to cover other events.

What a dirty slut you are NBC. You've littered your broadcast of the Olympics with commercials ruining even the selective coverage of the events. Ironically though, you managed to play commercials staring athletes competing in the Olympics, but I have no Idea who they are because you don't broadcast their events. Which, I guess, means you have even managed to ruin the impact of your sponsor's message by failing to show the events of the athletes they've hired to endorse their products.

Wow! You just all around suck!

I hope you loose the billion you paid for the rights to broadcast.

FU!

P.S

Don't think I don't remember that night in Vegas either NBC! You know, the illegal dog fights, and the all night cocaine party with those hookers. You better hope the pictures never turn up!

My husband has been disappointed in the coverage of the Olympic Basketball games. A few times when it was scheduled to be on they showed something else instead that was not on the schedule. I told him to try and see if he could watch online. When he was trying to do it the site has issues. So, he tried to tape it when it was scheduled to be on. He was watching one game and they just cut right away to water polo. They did not even bother to say they were going to cut away, he had to READ about it to find out what happened for the rest of the game he had been watching. He said he looked online and had read a lot of other people who had complained about the lack of coverage and the internet site having issues (from too many users?). It was the one thing he was looking forward to and now he is just disgusted with NBC overall. He said now he could care less about it now. He also had read about them stating LIVE when it was not live among a few other things. So, NBC you screwed up big time and have frustrated a lot of people.
