Muxtape Shut Down By RIAA?

muxtape-down.jpgThe Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) appears to have ankled popular (but illegal) music-sharing site Muxtape.

"Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA," the site's homepage says.

"No artists or labels have complained. The site is not closed indefinitely. Stay tuned," the company says on its blog.

NYC-based Muxtape, founded by former IAC/Vimeo staffer Justin Oullette, launched this past spring, and is funded by his former boss -- Vimeo cofounder Jakob Lodwick.

A similar (but legal) service called 8tracks recently launched.

Ed, could be. Have asked Justin for more information. Would be a pretty lame joke if it's not true.
Would be a lame joke. On top of that, it wouldn't be surprising in anyway if Justin heard from the RIAA. At best, his site is in a legal gray zone, and a literal-minded lawyer would have very little trouble making a case against him if he/she was so inclined.

Which doesn't make it any less crappy for Justin or his users, who are doing the kind of music discovery and sharing the industry needs to survive.

Check the muxtape tumblr. This was simply humor in their error message. The site is down because it unfortunately hasn't been functioning properly the past few days. Perfectly valid mp3s (under 24 mb) would not upload or take multiple attempts to be added, and once added would often not be reflected in the number of songs remaining or the muxtape itself.
Marshall, don't see anything on the Muxtape tumblr that indicates that it's humor. But who knows?

By the way, love that you both you and Ed are commenting on the same blog post.

When I first read their blog (because it was in my aggregator yesterday) I thought they were just being funny, a parody of all the many, many, many, many MP3 blogs that have been harassed into silence (most cite artists and publishers, this is the first one I've seen specifically name the RIAA) but then I got word from another blogger that there was more to it (I still thought it a joke at first) and when I went to my own muxtape, there she was, gone.

Must have been my posting Louis and Bebe Barron ... no wait, can't be it, the RIAA already said the Barrons couldn't get any Oscar for their Forbidden Planet soundtrack because it wasn't 'music'. Hmmm ... well maybe it was the Marcel Duchamp?
