Another One Of Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard Buds Leaves Facebook

|

markzuckerberg4.jpgJeff Hammerbacher, an early Facebok employee who headed the company's data analysis team, has given notice. Venturebeat's Eric Eldon, who broke the story, has Jeff's bio:

Hammerbacher is one of company founder Mark Zuckerberg’s acquaintances from Harvard, and was recruited out of his Bear Stearns analyst job on Wall Street. He built the “Data” team at Facebook from the ground up. This team plays a vital role in analyzing the site’s users’ behaviors, finding things like changes in traffic patterns and other information needed to make any product — and increasingly business — decision. Hammerbacher’s team has also helped build out the company’s software infrastructure, and it has contributed two open-source software projects to the public.

Beyond that, though, Eric isn't sure why Jeff and other early hires, like Adam D'Angelo and Matt Cohler, have also left. Maybe they're too bored, or too wealthy. Or maybe they don't get along with the new execs Mark Zuckerberg has been bringing in, like Google vet Sheryl Sandberg. Or all of the above. Take your pick.

Maybe its the fact that the whispers of Facebook's real valuation are true and their worth is probably 1/3 of the ridiculous valuation Microsoft placed on it.

There have been posts on here before referring to the flat revenue numbers that MySpace has generated. There's no way, shape, or form that Facebook has somehow found the alchemy to become supremely profitable.

Strike while the iron's hot if these people are able to sell their positions.

A four-year vesting schedule is pretty much universal for tech startups. For very early hires, their initial grant of options dwarfs all the rest of their compensation. If these guys are coming up on their four year anniversary, they're probably looking at pay cuts of around 90%. I'd expect this to be the single largest factor.

Smaller factors probably include the massive growth of the company (people who thrive in a 10 person company will probably not enjoy a 600 person company) and the slowly dawning realization that while Facebook may be successful, it's not likely to be a world-changer.

Too wealthy? Let's say someone has 10% of Facebook's stock...How do they cash out? And on what valuation?

4 years vesting of a company that hasn't gone public? That's not worth a whole lot.

BlogReader: Vested employees who were able to sell their Facebook shares would find plenty of buyers. Even if they sold at a value of $3 billion, early employees would have a very pleasant payout.

Say they had options for 1% of the company, and have been their four years. I'm 99% sure that these guys early exercised and 83(b)'d their options, so now they own shares worth 1% of the company. If they quit, they still own the shares. Quitting just stops vesting and makes you forfeit anything that isn't vested. Sure, they won't be able to easily sell their shares, but they can't easily sell them now, so what's it matter?

In fact, if the company IPOs or gets bought, it's likely that employees will be subject to trading restrictions. If these guys quit, they'll probably be able to sell their stock immediately after the IPO/buyout.

Another angle -- these early folks are out of their league. It's one thing to be a 20 yr old with no work experience doing your best for your buddies' startup when that startup is insignificant and all of your colleagues also have no experience. It's a totally different scenario when that startup becomes one of the most valuable private tech companies, has millions of unique visitors, and the professionals start coming in. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the bigger internal struggles was how to bring in experienced managers to replace the kids as Facebook needed to scale.

Spot on iPhoney. Although, It'll be a disaster if Zuck is the last kid leaving his position. Facebook needs a experienced businessman as CEO, it's time to start milking that huge cow-like memberbase of some serious revenue.

It's interesting to notice these ppl leaving the country around the same time we've heard Facebook valuation going down. The last time Microsoft bought shares Microsoft's valuation of Facebook was $15 billion and everyone thought that was official (duh, valuation by Microsoft, looks pretty reliable, ain't it) and only expects to go up...but look now ppl are talking about single digit billions?

And I do agree Facebook needs businessmen as opposed to tech-wiz kids....like Google, how they have Larry and Sergey as tech guys but Eric as the money-maker

Thanks for the reflection.

While I agree that young people generally cannot run a billion-dollar company for too long, it is really odd that they all choose to leave the company altogether. There's nothing wrong with moving within the org into a place that fits your skill set. Most people would be ok with that, especially this young. I suspect that there's also some crisis of confidence that is driving people away from facebook. Perhaps it's the failure of Beacon.

Why is the picture of Zuckerberg and not the guy who left?! I'm so sick of his face.

It's either because of money or Zuckerberg's smelly socks. Buy some shoes, dude.
