Yahoo's Historical Hit: The Obamas On Election Night

|

FlickrElectionNight01.jpgBarack Obama's longtime campaign photographer David Katz took 82 pictures of the soon-to-be first family on election night. Later, Katz uploaded them to Yahoo's (YHOO) photo-sharing site, Flickr. Gawker's Ryan Tate puts it in perspective:

In some prior election year, the behind-the-scenes footage of a president-elect's first moments might have been captured by a photographer for, say, Life, or at least distributed through a glossy magazine like that. It must have been some small comfort to Barack Obama to be able to rely instead on a longtime photographer of his own, David Katz, at such an intimate moment, and at such a tender one, a day after the death of his grandmother. As for distribution? Photography's bridge to the 21st century, Flickr.

Of course, Yahoo isn't making any money off this -- when we're lucky enough to get the photos to load, we're not seeing any ads.Go see the best shots at Gawker. We've embedded the entire set as a slideshow below.

No ads because I think they are using a Flickr Pro account which is like 25 bucks per year.

Just thinking out loud as well. Why AOL/Time Warner, Viacom, Disney, Bertelsmann, Vivendi, Sony or News Corp for that matter. Those are all content. YHOO is access to the worlds of those players. A partnership with APPL is not too far fetched. They have premium devices for the mobile multimedia world. A merger would be a smackdown play under the right conditions. Both valuations are low now, but that will not last. It would create a knockout blow to MSFT and gouge android in the eye. Then wrap a deal with all the media giants in an an online super bazaar. It's an all IP multi-media future anyway. Games Central anyone? Whoa dude this is too far out. Back to earth Scotty. Bonne Chance!

I know this is horrible to say, but... does anyone else think that those pictures aren't that good? I mean, it's cool that they had these pictures taken and put them on Flickr, but there's something flat and polaroid-ey about them. Maybe they didn't want to insult their friend by having another, pro photographer also take pictures.

I actually really enjoyed these photographs. It felt that the photographer was not invading their space, staying a few paces back and just shooting the evening. Nice to see these.

WTF? I would prefer to see pictures of Cameron Dias.

This is an excellent series, though poingnant because rather than the jubilation he deserves you can almost feel how the weight of the world has settled squarely on President Elect Obama's shoulders. Good luck to him.

This is an interesting behind the scenes series, but as a professional photographer, I have to agree with the previous poster Joe....these are pretty lackluster shots, technically speaking.

If nothing else, they would be 100% more enjoyable if they were converted to black and white and given a big kick with brightness and contrast. They are definitely flat and yellow cast.

Yes, back in the day we would see amazing moments like this in Time, etc, and they would have been printed with the same level of exceptional skill due to any well-shot image. Developing and printing an image (yes, even digitally), has always been just as important as the moment of capture.
