When Jonathan Gay co-founded FutureWave Software in 1993, he had graphics software designed for pen computing in mind -- not for the nascent World Wide Web. But all of that changed following the release of FutureSplash Animator in 1996. Later that year, Macromedia acquired FutureWave Software and renamed the program Flash 1.0.

After years of service with Macromedia (and prior to Adobe’s acquisition of the company in 2005), Gay and three other Flash co-creators founded Greenbox Technology, a software company developing an interactive energy management platform to help consumers understand and lower their energy usage. “I felt it was time to step away from life mainly behind computers and connect it all to the real world,” said Gay in a phone call to SAI.*
