By the time John Romero -- then 23 -- teamed up with John Carmack, Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack to form id Software in 1991, he already had more than 12 years of videogame programming and design experience under his belt. With id, Romero helped change the face of the gaming industry with first-person shooter classics like Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM and QUAKE.

After leaving id in 1996, Romero went on to found two more game shops with Hall: Dallas Ion Studios and Monkeystone Games. Since 2005, Romero and his new, unnamed game studio in Silicon Valley have been in stealth mode, developing a MMORPG intended for global release.

“The company is in the naming process and will be announced at our reveal” [later this year], wrote Romero in an email to SAI. “Our entire company now has over 200 employees internally and employs many vendors and outsource agencies to create the highest quality products. We've been very busy the past 3 years!”
