What's your plan for finding a new job?

The first thing I did was reach out to anyone and everyone I could to let them know that I was laid off, what my skills are, and that I'm  available. I got a lot of leads from that and I've been pursuing them. I've also thought of back up plans like grad school, creative projects, and freelancing, but a full-time job is a priority.

Had any interviews or sent out any resumes yet?

Been sending my resume out like mad and had a couple of interviews.  Three in particular seemed to go well, and two of those three are jobs I'd love to have.  Felt good about them but no offers yet.

Have you had to change your lifestyle at all? If so, any tips for other readers in your position?

Yes.  I realized I'm a total yuppie.  Manicures, fancy lotions, organic tampons - you name it.  I learned how to be really careful with grocery shopping and think about what I'm really going to eat. I used to eat all organic and I've changed my standards to just fresh. Make myself walk more often vs taking cabs so I wear more comfortable shoes.  Also, keeping a clean apartment helps maintain sanity.  I'm otherwise more cluttered.  Not going out and drinking late much because I can't handle waking up late and doing nothing all day as an unemployed person.  Too sad.

Did you see the layoff coming? Could you have? How would you suggest others who might get laid off prepare for it?

No.  This was a surprise group layoff.  I also depended on my work blackberry and laptop as my primary devices.  Back those up!  And of course, I wish I saved more money.  Best thing I did do was take my vacation days before the layoff and enjoy myself.  It's easy to feel guilty about vacationing, but I'm glad I went where I went when I had the chance.

Any other general words of wisdom for those who are in or could be in your predicament?

I can't really offer wisdom until I've found my way out, right?  But I know this much - don't be a dick.  Friendships and camaraderie come a long way when you have to find a new life.
