Microsoft Planning An iPhone-Like App Store? Smart Move, But Won't Be Easy

|

touch-diamond.jpgMicrosoft (MSFT) is working on an app store for its Windows Mobile phones -- similar to rival Apple's (AAPL) iPhone App Store -- according to an alleged Microsoft job posting spotted by AppleInsider. The store, "Skymarket," would work with phones running the new Windows Mobile 7, which is supposed to go on sale sometime in 2009.

If true, this is a smart but expected move: Apple's App Store is one of the highlights of the iPhone experience, and Google is readying a marketplace for its Android phones, too. If there really is a mainstream market for smartphone apps -- the iPhone's early success suggests there could be -- any platform without an easy-to-use app store and installer will be at a disadvantage.

The challenge: Building something that's as elegant as Apple's iTunes software yet complex enough to deal with the Windows Mobile industry.

Apple's widgets work on two devices -- the iPhone and the iPod touch, which are functionally similar, and have indentical user interfaces.

Meanwhile, Windows Mobile operates on dozens (hundreds?) of different devices, each of which could require its own set of apps. For instance: Some Windows Mobile gadgets have huge touchscreens, some have tiny screens without touch; some have QWERTY keyboards, some have virtual, on-screen keyboards, and some have old-school, 12-key keypads. Some have GPS, others don't; same goes for wi-fi, 3G, Bluetooth features, user interface, carrier policies, etc. Which means some apps will work on all phones, and some apps will only work on a small subset.

Figuring out how to mix and match consumers, developers, carriers, and apps will have to be an easy, seamless, user-friendly process -- or it'll be a mess, and it won't work.

With Apples lead; looks like it going to be the apple app store vs the other app store.

Now I'm not a programmer in the slightest, but how about this 5th grade approach: When you get to the app store, there will be a screen that has 2 boxes:

Carrier
Phone Model

Then every app for the carrier and that phone model will pop up.

Also, app developers should have knowledge of how many of a certain type of phone was sold in 2007 / 2008 so they could determine what specific phones they want to develop apps for.

There is real value there for Microsoft. For all the hoopla Apple creates, again, they are such an ancillary player in real world business applications, including the corporate mobile infrastructure, that its not even funny.

There's no question Microsoft is playing catch-up with the "cool" factor when it comes to the iPhone. However, Microsoft has the GIGANTIC factor all wrapped up for the foreseeable future.

Ballmer, Allard, Ozzie, Mundie...these people aren't twiddling their thumbs. I think they're really moving Microsoft ahead without Bill at the helm. Maybe Bill was standing in the way of some long overdue innovation...

no more app stores. you should just be able to point your browser to what app you want and go.

I guess this is the beginning of the end for handango.

David E, you're right that it shouldn't be too difficult. Handango more or less works the same as you describe, although very inelegantly. It also makes clear that Apple isn't that far behind. Yes, Handango has 17,000 apps for WinMo, but drill down to any one device and the odds are you are talking between 2000 and 3000 apps. Apple's App Store is already in that range. Every analyst now expects iPhone shipments to surpass all WinMo shipments early next year. Each individual device that may require individual programming has a tiny sliver of the market, and Microsoft only owns it insofar as a license fee and the developer platform. So... sorry, right on the first point; wrong on Microsoft having the GIGANTIC factor.

It will work as well as MS' previous attempts like PLAYSFORSURE which did not work on most devices and then, MS invented a new PLAYSFORSURE for Zune ... this thing ahs FAIL written all over it.

It's first problem will be that Verizon will never sign on unless MS agrees to turn over 45% of the profits for any app ...

Next, this error message will occur for 85% of users. The ATTACHED DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED ... with of course a gray-out RETRY button.

MS is now officially the DMV of technology.
