Apple Screws Another iPhone App Developer (AAPL)

|

steve-jobs-hand-on-chin.jpgAs we've said before, Apple's iPhone app store is Apple's app store, which means it can block any app it wants for any reason it wants. That's the deal, and developers knew that from the beginning.

But Apple's (AAPL) iPhone app vetting strategy -- a black box, with little to no communication with developers -- continues to reinforce the need for a better set of guidelines, a better feedback loop, and some kind of appeals court.

The latest example: A podcast-downloading app called Podcaster that its developers submitted to the App Store on August 18. Almost a month later, they got word that their app was being rejected. From their blog:

Apple Rep says: Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes.

That's right folks, it duplicates the functionality of the desktop version of iTunes.
Therefore, it was denied from sale in the app store. Although my app does allow you to listen to podcasts (like iTunes), it also allows you to download them directly to device and that is something Apple does not offer.

...Apple had nothing in the terms prohibiting developers from duplicating features currently available on desktop application. I followed all the guidelines and made sure everything is in the correct place. Yet Apple denies me because I allow users to download podcasts just like iTunes.

Admittedly, we don't know the details, or if this is even true. But for argument's sake, let's take their word for it.

As the Podcaster developers point out, several apps already exist in the App Store -- which Apple approved -- that let you download/listen to podcasts, like "Mobility Today." And several apps also exist that duplicate the functionality of other Apple widgets, like myriad note pad apps, etc.

While Apple's decision to block Podcaster is a bit confusing -- the app seems harmless, and actually useful to us -- we can see why the company might deny an app like Podcaster, which sort-of competes with one of its signature products. (If you're working on a jukebox app called uTunes, we recommend you find something else to do with your spare time.)

But moves like this aren't going to win Apple any fans. The guidelines for acceptance into Apple's store aren't clear, the approval process is long and opaque, and it seems to us that there's no formal appeals process to get Apple to change its mind.

Not something we'd be comfortable with if we were about to invest a lot of time and money into building anything for Apple's platform.

I think it's hilarious how something like the "Pull My Finger" app gets rejected for "limited utility", when one of my apps gets approved. And believe me, my app is not really that useful!

The real complaint that I have with Apple is how SLOW everything happens. Company developer applications are taking up to 4 weeks to just be accepted into the program. Individuals are just about within 24 hours now.

What no one is really talking about though is the fact that it's taking 4 WEEKS, AFTER you're accepted just to have your financial contracts approved. No financial contracts means no applications in the store for you. Free or paid.

Top that off with 1 week review times for each individual app (which will / can run concurrently with your financial contract) and you end up waiting FOREVER just to get anything into the store.

Why would we need a podcast app? It can't run in the background, so it has less functionality than iTunes. Okay, I can see the principal of it. Why restrict something that seems harmless but somewhat redundant. Perhaps they'd be better off sending an email directly to Steve Jobs.

keep in mind the word "Pod" in the app title was probably the first red flag in not being accepted.

That would be an incredibly useful application. You're limited to a single PC for updating podcast where as you can charge it anywhere. I hope they release it on Cydia.

Nothing new here. I used to code for the Apple platform back in the day. They are not a fun company to work with. This is why most of us eventually moved over to a Wintel platform. Now we have a whole new set of eager bright eyed developers who have no idea what utter disdain Apple has for them.

thx Davis for the info, alot of developers love working for R.I.M.

Perhaps the app had functionality too similar to something Apple is planning on doing in their own software?

As someone who has been primarily a Mac user since around 1999-2000 (but still supports PCs in the workplace on a daily basis), I think one thing holds true with Apple. They're PROACTIVE about introducing new products that innovate in some way, but very REACTIVE about handling customer-service and support related issues.

Time and time again, you'll see people discover a fairly serious flaw in a piece of Apple hardware, or point out major bugs in their software, only for it to appear to fall on deaf ears. When the "noise level" gets high enough about a particular problem though, all of a sudden, Apple makes good on the issue with a recall, a patch or firmware update.

I think some of this is due to them trying to do so much with a relatively small workforce. (Look how they had to pull people from OS X just to get the iPhone done on time, and it STILL had a LOT of incomplete features we had to wait months to get after it went on sale.) A company like Microsoft, by comparison, has no such problem - being FAR larger.

I think this whole iPhone app issue will come to some sort of sensible conclusion, but as is typical for Apple, not before a couple more months of ranting, complaining and bickering go on out there about it. They just don't move that quickly when the demand is for "clear, written statements of policy" and the like.
