"Hey, Guys, Amazon's Kindle Rocks!"

|

KevinRyanBeet.pngSAI Chairman Kevin Ryan, the globe-trotting former CEO of online ad powerhouse Doubleclick, weighs in on the Kindle debate. Also on Hulu:

I bought the kindle for my 13 year old son for our trip to india - he LOVED it. He bought 13 books, read them all, did not have to carry any of them, and we saved over $80.

Worth noting that at least in our case, we would have purchased those books at Barnes and noble for about $200 and instead spent $120 at Amazon (just in the the last 2 weeks) I have not started using it yet.

also - I really like hulu for watching jon stewart

Hmm... We can understand why your son might have TOLD you he read those 13 books on his awesome summer vacation, Kevin.  But did you actually SEE this voracious scholarship...or could the Kindle have sat unused in his bag?

Actually, never mind.  If the Kindle turns out to be the best way ever for kids to fool their parents into think they're doing something constructive, it will be a massive global hit. Especially if Amazon can figure out a way to put a little TV tuner in there.

Henry great market research. My dog LT likes the Kindle too.

Real people might also want to factor in the cost of the device, itself, against their "savings."

Reminds me of that old joke about the housewife telling her husband that because the dresses she bought were on sale, she bought even more dresses and "saved" her husband even more money.

Wait, you said Ryan was CEO, not CFO, of Doubleclick. Hopefully, that explains it...

Oh, come on, TM, you've got to admit the Kindle is doing better than people initially expected. Especially given that the design is really weak and the prices (of both books and hardware) are way too high.

If they can get this much buzz out of current version, not hard to see how it can be major hit down road. First iPod, after all, was the size of a toaster.

Any missing disclosures? Is bezos a new investor in SAI, or theladders for example? Is bezos being pitched by this fellow right now?

It's one thing to conspicuously praise kindle (which might be genuine), but to also criticize barnes and noble (versus amazon!) seems a bit ... you know.

Also, if this guy is so interested in saving 80 bucks on his family trip to India (hilarious!), he could try using a library.

Henry,

I wonder why you're so quick to defend the Kindle, when I was merely questioning the f*cked-up math in Ryan's perceived "savings." There is nothing in my post that should have prompted the level of your reply. And there you go with another iPod reference...really.

That being said, I agree with your doubt that the story is actually true; What kid reads 13 books while on a trip to such an interesting county as India? 13? What's the word I'm looking for? Bullsh*t? Close enough...

I actually own a Kindle. Got it for Christmas as a gift and have to say I use it daily--and I was initially very skeptical of the product and the price. I am a big reader and I fly at least twice a week, and in the past flew long distances internationally. I used to carry a few books with me and the added weight/bulk on top of my laptop and so on, was annoying.

The best part about the Kindle: 2 week battery life. I don't even pack the charger. And then the built in wireless. That alluded me as well when reading the reviews. The fact that you can download the first chapter for free is the hidden gem in this product. I can't tell you how many books I've purchased at the airport in desperation for something to read only to cringe in horror 20 pages later when it was too late. The Kindle let's me sample a range of books and buy only the ones that hook me in after the first chapter.

And then having a few reads going at once is also nice. I like to read business books, fiction, and the occasional biography/memoir. Having a range of books pre-loaded let's me pick the reading I am in the mood for without carrying a stack. And I have made my nightstand a much happier place without four or five books stacked up there as well.

The biggest drawback? Reading on a plane or in public. People comment and stare and I am not a gadget show-off. maybe that's why you don't see many out there. Leave us alone!
--Alice

I showed it to a non-techie professor friend and he has been hooked as well. If you love to read, this is a simple and very efficient way to do it, and it let's you sample even more books (good and bad) for much, much less than those (mostly) lame airport bookstores.

We didn't mention that Amazon pays us $50,000 a month to write about the Kindle? How careless.

Nope...no missing disclosures (I've owned Amazon stock for a decade and still do, but that has nothing to do with the Kindle). We trashed the Kindle when it came out, so its success is just making us look like idiots.

Henry, so how long will be have to wait to get to "Down the Road?"

On another note, my niece, who is in college, makes a few good points about why the Kindle won't take off in college; besides the good points made in former SAI postings.

"A lot of people I know also feel the need to have books and print-outs to highlight and write on the margins as they read. With regular books there is the appeal of borrowing/lending, having a collection on your shelf for your reference or for other people's reference. With textbooks, it is also popular to buy used ones and sell them again after use."

I think the Kindle has some kind of margin notes, but I don't see it supporting any of the used/borrowing features.

What WOULD be cool is if I could load in the ISBN number from all of the books in my bookshelf and move them all onto the Kindle. I would pay a small fee to get that big bookshelf out of my house.

I posted comments about actually owning a Kindle a few post up. Just wanted to add: when you finish a book, you can clear it off the memory and Amazon keeps is online for you - meaning you can download it again anytime. This virtual bookshelf is great, especially if you collect books. I know I can go back and re-read something or use it as reference down the road, but it keeps mu Kindle clear for only the reading I am currently doing. No more bookshelves, my house is full!

What I don't get about all the Kindle bewilderment is why people are so hung up on the price. It's under $400 and it's a fixed cost. That's not that expensive, people. You get free lifetime cellular wireless that actually can access the internet, download newspapers and other content all day long, on top of a great book reader. And the books are $9 instead of the $25 you pay at a store.

If you don't read, this is not for you, but if you read constantly, and especially if you travel a lot, I cannot tell you what a major help this product is.

Alice, thanks. Those are great observations. Didn't know about the virtual shelf feature.

I bought a Kindle at the beginning of the year and as frequent, frequent flyer, I can tell you that there is nothing better than a Kindle. You download a bunch of books and they are always with you. I am even studying a few languages when I am bored. All from Kindle. Inexpensive and easy to carry. Glad that I do not need to buy crappy books on the airport anymore. Just downloading everything anywhere, at least in the States.

I wrote the following about Amazon in May:

Microsoft and the Media are focused on the wrong target. At $31, Yahoo is being valued at $45 BN. Assuming a 40% acquisition premium, Amazon also costs $45 BN.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched in 2002, and has revolutionized the entire Internet infrastructure model. AWS disrupts storage, hardware, hosting and content delivery markets, and is increasingly the most strategic service for thousands of Internet services. The AWS team is outstanding. Rackspace, Joyent and Media Temple provide small-time competition, and Google only released App Engine in 2008, giving Amazon the undisputed leadership position in utility computing.

Amazon has spent the past several years developing emerging leaders in digital downloads. MP3 is more open and flexible than iTunes, the Unbox + TiVo integration represents an important implementation in the Set-Top / TV services market, and the Kindle appears to be exceeding Amazon’s internal projections. Digital technology continues to impel fundamental change in media distribution, and Amazon is well positioned.

In retail, Amazon has the most comprehensive user-generated review database and Prime ($79 = free 2-day / $4 next-day shipping), the cost-effective answer to many Internet shipping problems; the alternative is a Big Box experience and $4 gas. Ultra-competitive prices and the most diversified inventory (1st + 3rd-party) make Amazon the online Wal-Mart. Why use a comparison shopping engine when Amazon offers everything at great prices, in one location, with convenient service?
