Yet Another Cool Digital Newspaper Product: Get The Wall Street Journal, For Free, On Your BlackBerry

|

WSJ.com Mobile Reader.jpgYes, newspapers are screwed. But that isn't stopping some of them from coming up with some really interesting digital projects. So far we've seen the New York Times release a slew of cool gizmos and gadgets. But the Wall Street Journal's Mobile Reader is easily our favorite to date.

The software, available today, is one of those tools that makes instant sense the first time you get your hands on it: It delivers all of the Journal's content, updated constantly, in whatever form makes the most sense to you.

If you want to just scan headlines, you can do that. Click once and you'll instantly get a one-paragraph summary; click again and it will download the entire article, which takes about 10 seconds, max. The reader also passes our subway/airplane test with flying colors -- it lets you save stories you've downloaded so you can read them when you're underground or in the air.

We'd go on and on about this thing, because there are plenty of other useful features (you can customize it to receive non-WSJ newsfeeds, like other newspapers and blogs, for instance). But it's easy enough to see for yourself, provided you have a latish-model BlackBerry: Click here for a free download. The Journal has also wisely made the service free for now -- as in, you can get the Wall Street Journal, delivered to your Berry in real time, at no cost -- but it's definitely worth paying for.

Obligatory carps:

  • Where's the iPhone version? We don't know. But it makes plenty of sense for the Journal to roll this out for the BlackBerry (RIMM) first, anyway -- its readers and the Berry's installed base match up perfectly.
  • What's with the WSJ ad that takes up the third of the screen? The one that we keep clicking accidentally, even when we try hard to avoid it? We don't know, but it's got to go. We're all for ad-supported content, but not when the ads are an impediment.
  • Isn't this really just a souped-up version of the BlackBerry reader made by mobile software deveoper FreeRange? Yes, it is. Good for the WSJ for adapting an off-the-shelf program instead of reinventing the wheel.

Normally this is the part where we say that even the coolest apps won't save the newspaper industry. But we have to admit, this one's pretty encouraging: It doesn't replace the experience of reading the paper in print or online, but it definitely augments it. And eventually, it should provide the paper with another income stream. That can't hurt, right?

Wow, this is smart & easy, and has social functions enabling sharing on delicious and Facebook. Little icons show read/unread (or, scrolled over/unscrolled over). I don't think the ad is so bad -- it doesn't follow you when you scroll through article lists or stories. It's gotta be justified with some kind of ad presence, right? And of course it's for the print WSJ ...

The only NYT app for my Blackberry Curve I've been able to find is an NYT icon that links to nytimes.com (http://www.nytimes.com/ref/membercenter/bb_faq.html). It's a solid mobile site and all, but leaves something like this to be desired.

Just make WSJ free online. With opera mini 4 you can save pages. When i am taking the subway i sometimes read FT articles that i have saved. It is quick and easy. If the WSJ online was free i could do the same thing. Murdoch don't half ass it.

Yes, it's great and yes, it's from FreeRange.
I have to say that I've been using the service through one of your competitors: PaidContent made this application available a couple of months ago and since then, I fell in love with the app, using it as a central repository for all of the content I need on the go, feeds from all the tech blogs (SAI, TechCrunch, AllThingsDigital), general infos such as the NYT, WaPo, weather, french newspapers etc. The sky is the limit because it is just a feed reader so as long as the site has RSS feed, you pull it out in an acceptable format.
Anyway, still happy when the more established brands actually are more aggressive. And yes, it's still the WSJ for free.

Of course, now I'm having trouble getting the app to update feeds. I assume that will get solved soon.

I can't even get the damned thing to install on my bb! Some crap about midlet name missing. Damn you Murdoch!

@Greg Hao - I got the same message when I tried to use Opera Mini to download and install. When I used the BB browser it installed fine.

This app is great!! Hehateme - this app allows free access to WSJ content. I agree with Alex--the ad is not so bothersome. So excited about this...

Although it's not free, the FT app has basically exactly the same features. So WSJ is kind of late to the game -- and personally, I would find having to click twice to get to the actual article annoying. The FT app goes straight from headlines to the article.

Oh now that's thoroughly awesome.

I had been leaning towards trying a Blackberry as my next phone and this may be the deciding application.
