Obama and the Born-Alive Act [Yuval Levin]


Six years ago, Congress passed the "Born-Alive Infants Protection Act,"
making it illegal to kill a child who is fully born during an attempted
abortion. The bill passed without a single opposing vote in either
house, and was signed into law by President Bush on August 5, 2002. When
he was a state senator at that same time, Barack Obama opposed a state
version of the bill in Illinois. His explanation for the vote since then
has been that the state version did not include a so-called "neutrality
clause" which says explicitly that the bill is not meant to influence
the legal standing of a fetus before birth one way or another. The
federal law contained such a clause, and the state law, Obama has long
insisted, did not. As recently as June 30, the Obama campaign made that
case to answer the charge (in that case from Bill Bennett) that Obama
had opposed the Born-Alive Act.

But now, the National Right to Life Committee has uncovered proof that
Obama in fact voted in committee against even the version of the
Illinois Born-Alive Act that did include exactly the same "neutrality
clause" as the federal bill. On March 12, 2003, when the bill was being
debated, an amendment was added that inserted the neutrality language of
the federal bill verbatim into the Illinois bill. Obama voted for the
amendment (that's the vote on the left-hand column on this committee
vote record), and then voted against the amended bill (that's the vote
on the right on the same document). All the Democrats on the committee
(which Obama chaired) followed his lead, and the bill was defeated.

This was, again, legislation that in the same form had by then passed
unanimously at the federal level. Even NARAL did not oppose it.
Apparently Barack Obama did, and his old explanation for doing so seems
at odds with the facts.

This would not be the case if you were to add in the number of hits from the Paris Hilton video, which wasn't exactly flattering to McCain.

Hilton's video was produced by Obama supporters, so is a defacto Obama ad. Thus, your conclusion is faulty.

Maybe because people are finding McCain's videos when looking for less ...political content? I don't know if youtube has search trends, but google trends shows Paris and Britney are still much more searched than either presidential candidate (which is kind of sad)

What I will never understand is how people (like NOOBAMA) would rather cast a political vote based on a social issue than true political issues. Face it. NO ONE is going to stop a woman from terminating her pregnancy if she is determined to do so. Period. Whether she uses a safe surgical procedure or a coat-hanger, she is going to do it. I personally do not agree with abortion for religious reasons, but I am also level-headed enough to know I can't control what another person does with her own body. So why try? Especially when there are more pressing issues where gov't truly can intervene, like the war, the economy, healthcare, and energy.

if you look at mccains 2 most popular videos, they are the ones uploaded last week entitled "Celeb" (which spawned the paris hilton video) with 1.9MM views and "The One" with 1.1MM views. That is 3MM views between 2 videos which feature nothing but Obama, and making fun of the media love and hype and awe surrounding him. Take out these 2 videos and mccain would be behind as usual. Obama is in all of his own videos and mccain's most popular videos, thus is by far the more popular candidate on youtube. i think most of mccains popular videos have blown up in his face, and he is trying to roll with the punches like he actually as emotions/sense of humor. it is sort of funny but mostly painful to watch/hear haha.

Notice the ratings for the videos on You Tube... many of McCain's attack viral videos are being viewed a lot, but are receiving low ratings, as opposed to the high ratings Obama's videos receive.

There might be couple reasons; first, McCain hired the same dudes that effectively did the negative campaign against Kerry 2004; second, I noticed McCain's videos are professionally-made while Obama's are more of footage with little or no editing; McCain really gaining on fundraising? just different campaign style? we will see

How about this analysis of the Youtube figures: The McCain ads are funny and people like funny. That doesn't mean people watching them agree. I certainly don't agree with them, but they are unique.

If you look at the stats, the first three highest viewed videos from McCain are Celeb (2M), The One (1M) and then Troops (400K).

That more than covers the increase. All three are attack ads. What gives is that people like to check out "dirt".

I think people are finally waking up to the fact that Obama will be just a rehash of the Carter Administration. People that speak of the Bush administration as a failed administration either weren't alive in the late 70's or forgot.
Perhaps, we should rehash the Carter years so that we can get a preview of coming attractions.
Carter was a one term president that failed so miserably he couldn't even keep Teddy Kennedy out of the Democratic primary for what was suppose to be his reelection campaign. Domestically, we had double digit inflation, high unemployment, high taxes and no presidential economic plan to reverse it.
International relations were much worse. Obama is following Carter's lead in how to handle international relations. Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter's interational go-to guy is advising Obama.
As a country we had no respect among either our cold war foes nor our allies. Carter's one claim to success was the middle east peace talks. Unfortunately, history has proven those talks to have been a waste of time and tens of billions of dollars in 'extortion' in the name of aid to Egypt and Jordan. Egypt has stiffed Israel and the U.S. time and time again by providing smuggled arms to terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah while we dump billions in extortion money on them. Carter's other foreign policies included a poorly designed and failed attempt at rescuing the Iranian hostages which were readily turned over after Reagan was inaugurated. One might ask why they waited for Reagan's inauguration? Was it that they hated Carter more? No, they didn't respect him while they feared Reagan. Carter also greatly influenced the Soviet Union to abandon Afghanistan by boycotting the Summer Olympics in Moscow. Yeah right, that worked! The Muhujadeen chased the Soviets out years later.

I support McCain and I'm 26, we aren't all in an older demographic.

but the fact of the matter is that there hasn't been a drilling spill since 1969 in Santa Barbara, CA. So, we're talking about almost 40 years ago since our last drilling oil spill occurred and still morons think it happened last week. Some believe Exxon Valdeze is a drilling accident. ...Duuuuhh!!! I'm sorry, but NO! It was an oil tanker. And no matter whether we drill or not, we will still have oil tankers. Better yet, if we drill, perhaps we can reduce the number of tankers, eh? The fact of the matter is that we drill in the gulf of Mexico and didn't spill a drop after Katrina. Why? Because technology has come a long way. We have better controls over environmental damage. We actually kill far fewer animal life by drilling than we kill with windmills which kill birds all the time.
