Tipster: A Few More AOL Layoffs (TWX)

|

cleaver.jpgA former AOLer reports that the company has started another round of cuts, this time on a very small scale -- "on the order of a dozen". No names yet, but we hear folks involved were product managers and product marketers who worked out of Dulles.

Valleywag had previously reported a tip that predicted "big layoffs" on August 20 (that'd be today), but AOL officials have insisted to us that no large-scale cuts are in the works. Instead, expect an ongoing series of small trims, like these appear to be.

As always, we're looking for more information: pkafka AT alleyinsider DOT com or via our anonymous tip box.

No surprises her - AOL has not been a relevant Internet company since the 90's.

Despite hiring a few people that 'should have' shaken things up (they really didn't) they still have the look and feel of an old web company.

Sorry guys.

As usual, not much of a story. The fact a few positions in a company of approximately 8,000 positions as pruned is just normal business at that scale.
In fact , if they come from the area that y can say is suffering from dis-invesment, that would be a good thing.

DorkMud, save your corporate PR speak for the remaining members of this failing enterprise.

I am sick and tired of folks bashing the company with the same old vanilla arguments like company is not relevant, lost its touch etc. Common, give them a break. This is a small round and happens everywhere.

No Break for AOL!!! HAHAHAHAH

Keep serving those ads losers. That's all they can think of over there. Bill Wilson's brain is a peanut.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. AOL is still a cool place to work. The perks are great, and the people are cool. This site sucks!!! Long Live AOL!!!!

AOL isn't the coolest or shiniest or the biggest boat in the lake, but it's in the lake. And it's still bigger than most.

I wonder how many easy-shot naysayers actually have experience working at the *scale* of AOL? I find your comments boring. And obvious. Embarrassing, even.

do you truly believe there's nothing interesting going on inside its doors? no worthwhile creative whipsmart interesting people working there?

I'll tell you, as will most former employees who aren't bitter and had a pretty good idea what they were (and were not) signing up for from the beginning, AOL is a fascinating place to work--maybe not forever, but it's sure educational to work day-to-day at the scope, size and scale of AOL (and whether we-all can relate to this: AOL still has *huge* reach), with as loooong an internet history as AOL, with as increasingly nimble an infrastructure and business model as it has (especially for an enterprise of its size).

And people who give them ish for selling ads...? tell me who's not selling ads? what are you rattling on about?

CC3er said:
OCt07,

You were part of the crap that needed to be cut..Don't be bitter, get a new job and move on. Heck I've been drinking the kool aid for 10 years! It taste great.

CC3er... enjoy the taste because the rondies are adding the poison as we speak.

I am not mad but consider myself lucky to have left with a paid 4 month vacation.

However the rondies will screw you when it is you turn to go down for them.

You must be in Dan Holohan's Clique, they are some of the biggest ass kissers there and know how to circle the wagons to protect themselves and screw anybody that threatens their free ride at AOL.

I worked at aol for five years and left last summer ,and I hope the company is turning the corner. I just don't think companies on the way back up have huge layoffs every year and miss quarter after quarter. Maybe I'm wrong.

So what was the final score? How many did eventually get canned? What was the package like? I am curious.

To CC3er

part of the crap??? Not quiet There was stuff that broke because of me not being there and I had to be called after the fact to fix it, which I did freely. So stop believing that everyone that gets laid off is part of the crap. There have been a lot of good people that have let good simply because of numbers and budgets which is part of the reason AOL finds itself in the position it is in today

I was with the company back in 94 (and there until 07 13+ years) when it was still innovated and fun place to work. I watched it go from a small building in Vienna to the world company that it is today. It has gone down hill, if you don't think so you are fooling yourself. It lost its idenity with the whole TW debacle.

Do I wish it to turn around?? Hell yes! I hate seeing the company that I put my love and sweat and tears into falling apart. Am I bitter?? Not at all AOL and I had reached a crossroads and it was time. New job - have one with better opportunites.

AOL is like a wave. Ride it as long as you can. When it folds, catch a new ride. AOL is still a fun place to work. Don't believe all the crap you read on this site. I've watched my friends leave to "get the better opportunities" and only to wonder why they left.

Long live AOL!

Wouldn't it be more fun to talk about how Toyota/Honda is killing Ford/GM? Every company has "their" time. The internet makes all time speed up.

AOL as an ISP will die with a gasp and not a bang. AOL or whatever it morphs into will have to compete in that market like everyone else. The cheerleading and the naysaying is senseless. The stock price is the only thing that matters. I don't care if they sell pet rocks or mood rings as long as the stock price goes up/

nobody said:
we won't see big lay off anymore - package will suck just a month - no more 4 months at less you are level F or above - good luck to everyone. if you are the one you would wish you were let go back in oct07

DorkMud said:
Not many details even though there are 22 posts (this is the 23rd). I have to suspect the trimmings were in the product organization which if so, would have been expected. Anyway, Dulles is not where the action is anymore anyway, it is in New York City Now.
What happens there will give clear indication of where the company is truly going.

NYCDude said:
I think the numbers from TWX's quarterly reports are clear enough of an indication of where the company is truly going.

I for one hope TW gets rid of AOL the first chance they can. Malone? ELNK? just get it off our hands.

thanks for the plug! aol is so ... my 2nd album, aka 93.

AOL was a great place to work. It is sad that the company is not doing well and who to blame? The employees. All employees are spoiling like a little kid, they can request any technical products and computers they want, and they'll get it. When I worked there I’ve got a Mac pro, Macbook pro, Dell desktop & 24" flat panel, and Dell Laptop D820 and they are all new. That's why they have to cut every year.
