Music Subscriptions Coming To iTunes (AAPL) Next Month? Nope

It's late August, which means that it's time for a new round of "What Will Apple Do Next?" rumors, pegged to the new product presentation Steve Jobs usually gives in September. Last year, certain members of the commentariat convinced themselves that Steve would announce that the Beatles were coming to iTunes. And they probably will, one day.

Now several bloggers believe that Steve's going to introduce a music subscription service -- a reheat of a story that surfaced earlier this year. The Industry Standard summarizes the tales here, but we can save you some time: We've checked with a variety of music executives at major labels, and none of them have heard about it. Not happening.

But don't get too glum: Last year, instead of adding "Let It Be" to the iTunes catalog, Steve unveiled the iPod touch and a new iPod nano. And while we have yet to play with the touch, we can testify that the nano is awesome.

perhaps you should play with the touch. It gives wonderful insight into the next ten years of computing.

Of course, the iphone does all it can and more, but the touch has the benefit of no carrier costs and I have access in almost as many places through wifi.

Well, the pre-Thanksgiving period is the ideal time to release new iPods, not a subscription music service. Of course, new iPods are going to have to utilize more of the Touch interface. I'm hoping for an iPad, or iTouch device. Something about double the size of an iPhone.

Just as a bit of background, the Beatles rumor was started by Leo Laporte and Merlin Mann as a joke on the MacBreak Weekly podcast. The joke was that they said that it will be a "Yellow Submarine" iPod. They said it would be funny to start that rumor. Unfortunately, someone only listened to part of what they said and the rumor spread that it was coming out.

As for the latest rumor, it shows how unreliable the blogosphere echo chamber actually is. The rumor started as an anonymous email to various Mac-related sites, including Macrumors and MacNews Daily. There was no verification, they just published the rumor and said make of it what you will. All of a sudden, the rumor spreads and makes it onto legitimate newscasts here in New York.

I'm concerned for the state of the blogosphere, as well as the state of the "news" business when unsubstantiated - and ludicrous - rumors are reported as possible fact.

That's just my .02.

Oops. Sorry. I just noticed that you were referring to the Beatles coming to iTunes, not the the Beatles iPod rumor.
