Here's What iPhone 3G Owners Are Complaining About

|

iphoneline01.jpgNot all of us have bought iPhone 2.0s yet. So sometimes it's hard to figure out whether the carping we've been hearing has been from disappointed fanboys who expected the phone to come with a jetpack, or from clear-eyed consumers pointing out real flaws.

But this video makes us think that maybe some of the complaints are legit (Note to Apple fanatics -- we know this clip is more than a week old. This is for the rest of us). For instance: If the new phone isn't notably faster than the old one, what's the point of paying more for 3G access?

SAI senior editor Dan Frommer agrees: He informs us that he plans on harassing AT&T for a refund on his monthly service charge until the situation improves.

I agree with Dan Frommer. I was debating calling AT&T to complain. My service is spotty, and it seems the 3G network doesn't work about half the time.
For example, I was sitting outside in downtown DC (in Dupont Circle), with 5 bars of 3G network service, but I could not check my visual voicemail, three calls I made failed, I missed an incoming call, and when I tried to check a web site, my iPhone said I could not connect to the network.
On the positive side, the GPS accurately pinpointed my location. WTF?!

I held off on the iPhone figuring the 3g service it offered would be about as good as what my Blackjack II gets. Looks like I was right...

As John said, the most annoying part of the service is when you show a good signal but can't make a call, check email or surf... as if you're getting a false signal or are just in an area that's overloaded (and since I don't live in downtown NYC, SF or LA it's not like I'm competing with thousands of people per block).

At this point I've started considering setting my phone to edge only. While the issue existed before the new iphone it's definitely getting worse now... Perhaps all the new phones are just too much for things to handle?

Yup, that's what everyone's doing.

Even the AT&T salesdroid at their store admitted as much - turn on 3G only when you're off wifi *and* you want to browse. Turn it off afterwards (and you may have missed a few calls in between :-)).

Ironically, this is what Apple was saying when they introduced the original iPhone - that 3G wasn't ready for prime time. But we all bitched and moaned anyway until we got what we want and look at that! They were right all along.

They're the ones who still released the product, Rick Webb.

I think Apple and AT&T can be accused of exaggeration but isn't everything sold that way? None of the fuel milage results on automobiles are accurate either unless you rub the car down with Vaseline, put it in a wind tunnel in a lab, and never go over 55 mph.

My 3G is definitely faster than my first iPhone, but depending on where I am and the strength of signal, not even close to twice as fast. I find the MobileMe problems far more troubling.

Apple released the product because a lot of iDiots asked for it (pun intended).

LOL.... face it technology has its limit.

I simply don't get all the whining?? Exactly what other phones are on the market that offer a user interface and software stack that can do anything close to what the iPhone does? Oh yeah, Zero.

It's definitely a pain micro managing my network connectivity to avoid the 3G issues and to maximize the battery life, but I do it. Why? because the surfing the real internet on my iPhone while pumpming gas, waiting in line at the supermarket, or getting stuck waiting for the rental car is really really useful.

Name another phone that gives me the same capabilities and i'll check it out. In the mean time STFU.

Carried an iPhone along with two other 3g devices all running on the AT&T network. Surprisingly enough, it wasn't AT&T's problem with 3G, it is Apple's. The Samsung Blackjack (original one) and the LG I was carrying didn't toggle nearly as much in and out of 3G as the iPhone did. As a matter of fact, there were several times I had full 3G on both other phones and was hung on Edge with the Apple. Furthermore, missed calls on the Apple when it was on 3G were significantly higher than the other devices, with connectivity dropping off consistently with the iPhone while calls were received and placed flawlessly on the Samsung and LG. For a smart phone the iPhone doesn't seem very smart in negociating the network. Unconvinced, I tried more side by side tests with the three devices and even the aging Samsung was able to download and upload data smoother than the iPhone over the 3G network. Granted, that's probably because the iPhone wasn't on the 3G network despite saying that was the received signal. Sadly, when i whipped out a Blackberry that only runs on Edge, even that was able to datatransfer better than the iPhone which stalled on several attempts at non-voice related tasks. It isn't AT&T's fault that Apple didn't design a 3G ready phone, even though it is AT&T's fault for allowing a sub-par product onto their airwaves. It is a poor reflection of the QA to have this happen and certainly isn't going to help their status as a carrier as Apple fanatics seek to slide the iPhones flaws to be AT&T's fault. All things being equal, the only two tests I didn't run yet were pitting the iPhone 3G directly with the Edge version (enough people probably already did this anyhow) and pitting it against a non-smart phone, probably will borrow 2 & 3G Moto Razr's to test this if whatever the next patch Apple puts out doesn't resolve the issue.
