Firefly's Chat-On-A-Webpage Goes Live
Have something brilliant to say about a blog post or news story, but find leaving a comment and waiting for replies too slow? Then you'll want to check out Firefly, which formally launches today.
The service, which we wrote about earlier this spring, lets you embed real-time messaging on Web pages. It's a little dizzying - especially if you're the kind of person who gets overwhelmed by the crawl across the bottom of CNN or CNBC - but it's very cool. Here's how it works: With a click, users can activate Firefly, and type a message anywhere on their screen. Other surfers on the same page will see the messages for a few seconds, and can contribute to an anonymous conversation. You can try it for yourself on this post.
The service was developed in-house at Betaworks, the New York-based incubator that's invested in projects like like Tumblr, someEcards.com and iminlikewithyou. Biggest hit to date, by a long shot: Summize the search engine acquired by Twitter for about $15 million this month.
There are a few other services out there doing similar things: Me.dium combines webpage-based chat with social networking, on the theory people may want to drag their friends into their discussions. Weblin mixes chat up with customized avatars, and Google Lively wants you take your thoughts into a 3D environment. Firefly's lightweight entry just does chat -- with no registration or logins. We think it's a good place to start. What do you think? Let us know in comments below, or turn it on, and talk amongst yourselves.

it's cute for a minute, then it's game over.
a rev model might not be apparent, but there can be significant value for existing players
