Are AOL Blog Cuts Permanent, After All? (TWX)

|

downsizing.jpgAOL party line about the cutbacks at some of the company's blogs -- just temporary tweaks, through the end of the month. And some AOL bloggers have volunteered to write for free, anyway. But everything goes back to normal in August.

Not so, some of AOL's bloggers tell us. They say that this morning, they were told to check in with their manager via IM. Some were told that in August, it's back to business as normal. But for writers at some sites, the cutbacks are being made permanent, effectively putting a few bloggers out of a job. We've put in a request for comment to Brad Hill, who runs the Weblogs unit for AOL.

Unlike the pageviews-based pay at Gawker Media, AOL's bloggers are paid a flat rate per post -- usually about $15.  In some cases, that's been enough to eke out a modest living. Looks like some of them are going to have to get real jobs.

You've Got Bail, AOL

Is one company's trash another firm's treasure?

EarthLink (Nasdaq: ELNK) is presumably interested in AOL's dwindling access business.

"We think it's worth aggressively pursuing," EarthLink CEO Rolla Huff told The Wall Street Journal yesterday.

Aggressively pursuing? Don't knock yourself out, Huff. You're probably the only one interested in AOL's dial-up business. Really. Save for a few cable and telco providers that bundle access with their flagship offerings, can you think of any other company besides EarthLink that would pay good money to go after a Web access play?

Flat fee is just brutal. The Gawker method makes a hell of a lot more sense. Pay for performance. Why is that so hard for big media to understand? Seriously. Reward productivity.

hahahah ... $15 a post.. I bet they have real quality bloggers over there. I wouldn't know since I don't visit their site. $15... my god... With all that money AOL has wasted on dynashit.

All they talk about how great this new platform dynashit is. Well guess what Cahall. The platform is supposed to increase advertising dollars. Bottom line. It's not supposed to just be cool cuz we're on a new platform. What a loser, there are so many people that are leading technology that don't understand that.

They think once we switch over god will come down from the sky with his son Jesus and bless AOL with tons of advertising dollars. Fire all of tech. We've wasted all this time re-building instead of improving.

You might think $15 a post is chump change but it's endless riches compared to what most blog/tech sites pay...I'm talking $5 a post, $10 if you take your name off of your work. The cigarettes I smoke just to get through a rough draft cost me more than that. So for me it's like writing for free. I toyed with the idea of writing for several blogs last year (not AOL's, but more respectable players like Blorge, after I was invited by their editor) but it would cost me more to produce the posts than I would get paid for them, and the writing wasn't free-flow but forced/deadline/unexciting. Every minute spent slaving away for beans is a minute I can spend doing something more enjoyable. You couldn't make me do it, not even for many, many times AOL's pay rate. And yes, Tyler, while $15 an hour is beans, some of the biggest names on the Web take it just to get their name on something that hopefully will bring them recognition and buzz. If I cared about recognition and buzz I'd go that route, too, but in my opinion it just isn't worth it.

Marah Marie - Buzz buzz buzz... So maybe you can tell me what site of AOL's generates "true" buzz. I'm not talking your everyday traffic. I'm talking holy shit this is the most unique blogging I've seen since the inception of blogging. Please - These people need jobs work in Manhattan and live in a bad section of Brooklyn. That's all those bloggers are over at AOL. I'd rather wash dishes at Denny's you get more respect.
