Your 3G iPhone Predictions: GPS, Camcorder, On Sale Monday (AAPL)
We won't know what slick new features are included in the new 3G iPhone until Monday, which is when many expect Apple (AAPL) boss Steve Jobs to unveil the phone during his keynote at Apple's annual developer conference. But after analyzing the responses to our 3G iPhone prediction contest -- you can still play here -- we have a pretty good idea what to expect.
Features: Believe in the wisdom of crowds? Then tomorrow you're going to see an iPhone with GPS capabilities, video recording, an upgraded camera, and more space -- 32 gigabytes of storage.
- 65% bet the new phone will have GPS
- 45% bet it will be able to record video
- 40% bet it will have more storage space, such as a 32 gigabyte model
- 35% bet it will have a better camera, such as a 5 megapixel camera
Less popular, but still interesting suggestions: Solar charging panels, better search, an over-the-air iTunes store, a built-in IM app, wi-fi synching with your computer, voice dialing, front-side camera, and a video chat feature. But nobody thinks the new phone will have a copy and paste feature.
Release date: Very soon. Only 10% of readers thought the 3G iPhone would go on sale in the U.S. in July or later. Many think late June; a lot of responses came in for June 27, 29, and 30. And 25% of you think the phone will go on sale Monday.
Apple stock: The median AAPL Monday closing price readers guessed is $197, which would be a 6% increase from Friday's $185.64 close; not unreasonable. (But that includes one crazy guess of $150; without it, the median is $200, a 8% jump.) Only 10% of entrants think the stock will drop.
Haven't voted yet? You have until 12pm est Monday.

as for 32GB of Solid State Storage... I highly doubt it. youre average 32GB HDD costs over three hundred on it's own, mix in the fact apple has to shrink the form factor from 2.5" to 1.8" and then the fact that Apple prefers to make about 50% bank of it's products, there's no way 32GB is going to make it in. if you're lucky there will be a $499.99 model that will have 16GB, whiles the standard 399.99 has 8GB of space.
As for the gPS and what-not... do you think Apple makes smart phones, or apple products? Right - they makes Apple products, Meaning what ever Steve Jobs thinks up, they make, if ol' Stevey didn't think GPS was important the first time around, why would he toss it in now? GPS is OLD tech, and has been in standard phones for YEARS - if it was going in, it would be there. (Honestly the fact that the phone wasn't 3G compatible to begin with is sort of a sad sight when I first saw it... my Motorola Maxx Ve is frickin' 3G Compatible, and it's almost a year old now.)
Either way, it's still on a lesser Wireless carrier - until Verzion picks up the iPhone, I will continue to sign a full 2-year contract AND pay full price for the phone. I can get a LG with a touch screen, 3G, and all the other features we're "Hoping for" out now, and it's less expensive. the only think lacking is Wi-Fi (Which, in all honestly, only works at hot-spots where i'd have my Laptop anyway)
somewhere around then because it has been off the market for a
while now and apple is just losing profit.
As for GPS, I think it's a go this time. With its mobile products, Apple places a super-high priority on a minimum battery life threshold, thus, it leaves out features just to meet what Steve believes is the minimum life. Over the last year, chips have become more power-efficient and smaller (allowing more space for battery), and Apple power mgmt software and battery hardware have continued to get better. That plus Apple being ready now to market location-based commerce and social services via "Mobile Me" (or whatever they call it) means they have a marketable reason to include GPS. For this same "Mobile Me" reason, there will be a better camera, including video.
Unlike those other phones, Apple doesn't just add features. When Apple does add something, it's purpose is to push a specific theme. iPhone 1.0's real theme was Internet Communicator, thus, the native iPhone apps that access the Web. The iPod media player and cellphone were there to provide a comfort and familiarity level for consumers and analysts. iPhone 2.0's theme is going to be Mobile Me.
If the rollout is seen as being quick- current markets by June 20, fully "70 markets" global by end of Sept, then AAPL will outpace the stock market. Otherwise, it'll lag the stock market.
Apple stock will go up because along with the iPhone unveiling and software goodie bag will be a deal with China Mobile for a Beijing Olympics pilot launch.
The handset itself, at least superficially, looks no different to the current one, maybe except the back where a shiny black zirconium replaces the brushed aluminum. It has the MacBook Air sort of taper too. Maybe more colors will follow soon after.
The phone radio will be much more powerful to compensate for AT&T's subpar network. Indeed, it will have a GPS chip but Google and Apple are still working on refined functionality for the map platforms. I expect it to take another 6-9 months of software enhancements for the iPhone's mapping function to achieve really great GPS functionality.
The magic of the iPhone release tomorrow will be all about software. Steve Jobs and (possible future successor Apple showman) Scott Forstall will present some interesting capabilities that none of us saw coming.
The recessed headphone problem will be fixed and unfortunately, the battery will still not be interchangeable. I' unsure about copy-paste but believe some form of video capture, with no flash, will be included.
Overall, the China deal, the mixed reviews on hardware and software and the demonstration of how much faster 3G is compared to EDGE will give Apple a boost of 4% on the day to $193.50, more if the market rallies. No Russia deal.
