NBC's Online Olympics Policy: Big Win For Pirate P2P Sites

Is NBC going to botch the Beijing Games online? Looks that way.

The network is planning an unprecedented 2,200 hours of live coverage on the Web--far more than the 1,400 hours on six NBC U-owned TV channels. Good, right? One very big catch: The network won't allow you watch anything it thinks it has mass appeal -- that is, anything it intends to air on its own broadcast -- until it has shown it on TV, the AP reports.

UPDATE: Contrary to the AP report, NBC says "some" events will be simulcast live on TV and NBCOlympics.com.

In addition, NBC U is banning the use of any Olympic video online by other news organizations covering the event. Video from the Olympic trials, going on now, must come down on Aug. 7, the day before the games begin.

NBC U paid $800 million for the U.S. rights to the Beijing Olympics alone, and $3.5 billion for five Olympic games through 2008. The Olympics are a vast money-losing operation for NBC, meant to provide a ratings halo for the network's other shows and help promote the fall TV season. NBC expects to lose even more money on the online broadcast, but nevertheless sees it as an opportunity to build an audience that will surely seek coverage elsewhere if NBC doesn't provide it.

But by trying to embargo video online, NBC threatens to sabotage its own efforts, by giving pirate P2P and other illicit sites a de-facto monopoly on live online coverage of the games' most popular events.

NBC U says it can stop this via enforcement. The company says it is working with 100 of the biggest video sites on the Web to get them to take down ilicit video, and it is watermarking each second of video that comes out of the the International Olympic Committee's feed, to make takedowns easier. But that's just going to make taped footage scarce on legitimate video sites. It won't do anything to keep pirated TV feeds, or video shot by fans, from being uploaded to p2p filesharing services. (To see how this works, take a look at our coverage of Euro 2008 for an extensive list of illicit sources of live sports, as well as sources of ripped foreign feeds.)

NBC U actually has the opportunity to make piracy irrelevant. Not by fruitless crackdown efforts, but by ditching the antiquated notion that online coverage of live sports hurts TV ratings. One need look no farther than CBS's March Madness, or NBC's own online coverage of the U.S. Open to see that's not the case.

So: If you want to watch fencing or kayaking live online in August, NBC has you covered. If you want to watch gymnastics, swimming or any other marquee event on your browser, you're going to have to move your eyeballs elsewhere.

This is going to be not only one interesting event, as far as the olympics is concerned, but also how NBC networks stops piracy. I assume that YouTube will sit back and just anticipate....

100 of the biggest? Really? Are there even 100 worth fighting? At that point, anyone with a decent-capacity hosting account could be trouble.

Looking forward to UStream channels of Chinese TV feeds of games with amateur English commentary.

And I thought NBC was ahead of the curve.

NBC is spending real money to make more minutes of more events available to more people than ever before -- isn't that a good thing?

And can they really be faulted for trying to not cannibalize their own broadcast? Sure, you can say that their online streaming won't diminish their TV viewership, but I can certainly see why they'd think a risk exists there, and there are billions of dollars at stake. Meanwhile, the last line of this article makes it sound a bit like things like gymnastics won't be shown at all, when in reality, they're just shown after their appearance on TV. The ABC full episode site is extremely successful, and critically acclaimed, and it doesn't show Lost at the same time online that it does on TV either. Frankly, I think it's a great complementary strategy for the Games: you can watch special interest stuff or catch up on any event you missed on the site, and the live mass appeal stuff will be shown on TV.

Anyone who really knows how the Internet works knows that hundreds of thousands of people streaming a particular piece of high-definition video content at once can be, at best, extraordinarily expensive and, at worst, cause real traffic problems. I think it's a bit more responsible to use the TV for what it's best for -- mass appeal live events -- and use the Internet for more long-tail content.

Full disclosure: my company, Schematic, developed the video player for the NBC site in partnership with Microsoft, and we're really pleased with the user experience. This article predicting that the events will be "botched" may be correct; it's hard to know how the public will receive this very different and unprecedented sort of Olympics media experience. I'm guessing, however, it's going to be widely viewed as a major triumph for NBC.

@Trevor: Using the Lost comparison doesn't really work. Lost is a piece of entertainment. People watch old movies over and over again, reruns of episodes of television shows....but tuning in online to watch that missed gymnastics final? Sure...if I can make sure I haven't heard the results yet everywhere else....

Ah Trevor, so you are to blame? The NBC online coverage of swimming was fantastic, UNTIL I had to install the bloateware, DRM, spyware laden, resource hogging, horrible "silverlight". The video is a minute behind the audio, the feed is mega slow..the worst stream I've ever had in my life, from the worst player I've ever used. (I prefer the VLC player). Given the horrible "silverlight" (just another bad version of the equally bad Windows media Player) I intend to watch my olympics via CCTV. Same as the last Olympics. Or perhaps I'll pay for the Russian feed.
