Google Moves In On comScore, Nielsen - Again

|

Measuringtape.jpegDays after unveiling a comScore/Compete/Nielsen competitor, Google is unveiling a... comScore/Compete//Nielsen competitor.

Confused? So are we. Here's what we know: Google plans to formally unveil its new product -- AdPlanner -- which will provide Web analytics to media buyers looking to place display ads on the Web. The service, leaked on the Web site of the Advertising Research Foundation on Monday, was to be introduced at the organization's conference on audience measurement on Tuesday

An exec briefed on the announcement told the New York Times' Bits blog that the tool will help agencies identify where their target audience is most active on the Web. AdPlanner will harvest data directly from participating Web sites, and combine it with search and third-party data. Bits notes there will be some overlap with Google's Trends for Websites, a service announced last week, which sounds like it does much of the same work.

The difference? If we're parsing this correctly, AdPlanner is a "pro" version of the same service. Anyone else want to take a crack at explaining this? Let us know in comments below.

Uhhh oh. Google is going to make yet another analytic tool again for free. Initially. Me thinks the "pro" version comment in the article may point to a fee based solution in the near future. Anything with a "pro" connotation means = lets charge a little fee and grab some low hanging fruit.

absolute numbers instead of trend's relative numbers. google setup comscore last quarter :) "we killed our numbers this quarter - it's just that comscore is a poor indicator of traffic...oh, and by the way, we're rolling out a comscore killer"

Mike, this is a comScore killer? I think not! If you were an advertiser, would you believe that data based on users of the Google toolbar is representative of anything ... but Google users? Advertisers and their agencies will see through this Google ploy in a nanosecond. Bobo has it right: it's the fox guarding the chicken coop.
Separately, regarding comScore's traffic data for Google in the last quarter, did you see Jim Cramer's conclusion that comScore's paid click data (which measured the U.S. not international) nailed the flattening in Google's U.S. revenues: http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=743672050&play=1

With just a single announcement, ComScore, Nielsen Online, and Quantcast are in big trouble. I'd take all the Google users (which is over 60% of the US) over biased online recruitment panels of 1 million people as my audience measurement tool any day. Google just rocked this industry and you know tie-ins with Google Audio and Print Ads are the next step. The one thing I don't trust in the Google measurement is the demographics...the science behind how they arrived at those is shaky at best. It's difficult to avoid using the standard recruitment method of actual people to get the demo information...that's how the big audience measurement businesses will stay alive. Google can't accurately get that info and it's critical for ad buys. Maybe a partnership opportunity is on the horizon.
