Found! A Real Amazon Kindle User (AMZN)

Imagine our delight when we got on the subway, sat down, and saw a person reading an Amazon Kindle -- right in front of us! -- for the first time since it launched last November.

Meet Baratunde Thurston, comedian, blogger, Web editor for The Onion and big fan of his brand new Kindle. He says he bought it last week because of Amazon's recent price cut -- and has been having a great time reading books and blogs on it. He's even posted a Kindle action shot to Flickr.

Meanwhile, if you're interested in buying a Kindle but don't want to pay the full $359 list price from Amazon (AMZN), a tipster suggests you make sure to check out eBay, where new machines are supposedly going for as little as $299.

Two very important questions I have yet to see asked. Said another way, important information I have yet to see volunteered...

My guess is, once you back these costs and fees out, there is little in profit left for Amazon.

You meet some strange chaps up there.
Certainly don't think anyone (let alone Amazon) claiming Kindle profitable now or will be for a long time. Bezos won't even say when he thinks Kindle will be a significant business.

Has to be at least the size of a decent paper back. that's the whole point.
I meant the monochrome, no-gloss display, not the size.

I, myself, am a Kindle champion as well, and I think that there are a number of intangible "cost" savings and benefits to consider for you skeptics out there.

First of all, think of the convenience the Kindle provides you. Now, you can read all of your favorite newspapers, blogs, books, magazines etc. anywhere and everywhere. You do not have to worry about the weight and size of your reading material and about how you will transport it on the move.

Second, you can do and learn more with what would have been wasted down time while you wait for this or that. You can just pull it out whenever you have a few minutes here and there.

Third, think of the environmental cost savings. If we, as a collected whole, begin to do more and more of our reading from "paper-like" digital devices, we will be cutting down less trees, maintaining and even increasing oxygen levels and perhaps even fighting global warming.

Fourth, you begin reading content that you may have otherwise missed and will become more and more educated/cultured as you seek out new and different reading materials.

All in all, while $359 for this device plus the cost of the books etc. seems high, you are getting a great deal of value out of it, be it value from convenience, value from supplementary education, value from environmental protection or other value.

It makes a huge difference to me. Reading things on my phone or computer gives me eyestrain, the Kindle does not.

I use the Kindle as much for reading long articles and blogs as for books. It allows me to actually dig into something rather than skim it as I do on the computer or phone.

The main difference is the ability to read it anywhere that I could read a book. I can take my dogs for a walk and read in full sunshine. I've never seen a backlit display that could do that.

I'm also with Dave in that it allows me to keep up with my favorite blogs, news articles, etc. I take about 15 minutes in the morning to cut and paste the content into a text file, load it onto the Kindle (with no conversion, no subscription) and read them throughout the day wherever I happen to be.

Finally the wireless delivery is incredible, I have bought newly released books while standing in the Barnes & Noble and they are ready to read by the time I sit down at the attached Starbucks.

Completely disagree with the comparison to Newton.

The main reason for slower adoption is the cost...once they figure out how to wrangle that down you'll see the numbers spike. It's not due to usability. Everyone I know who has one loves it.
