Android Delays Annoy Google, Crush Sprint

AndroidDemo.jpgThe first phones installed with Google’s Android mobile OS were always supposed to go on the market during the second half of the year, and they will -- but just barely. The first Android phone, from T-Mobile, won’t come out until the fourth quarter. But Sprint Nextel (S), which had hoped to release a phone this year, won't get it done, and China Mobile may not as well, the WSJ reports.

Last month, at Google’s (GOOG) developer conference we saw what looked like a pretty complete demo of Android. So what’s the hold up?

The WSJ says some of the problems are specific to the carriers -- Sprint, for instance, has a new management team. But it's complicated by the fact that Google keeps tinkering with Android, which means that developers working on Android apps have to keep tinkering, too.

In the long run, this isn't terrible news for Google, which doesn't need Android and/or mobile to contribute significant revenue anytime soon. But it's yet another problem for Sprint, which could have really used a good iPhone competitor this December -- we don't think Samsung's Instinct is going to cut it.

iPhone's going to win this round. But being maried to AT&T ensures Android will be strong regardless of when it comes out, now or late in the year. Even if the offerings T-Mobile, Sprint et. al. won't do too well early on (or even ship, at a time when iPhone 2.0 flourishes), they're still likely to gain traction not long after.

It's basically still AT&T (iPhone) against everybody else (Android), which all but assures its survival. Symbian and Blackberry are really the only ones who should be worried at this point.

This shouldn't came as a big surprise to anyone. Open source software has a major control problem. A closed system (Apple), with limited partners, is more efficient to develop, regardless of its other negative aspects.

Vasanth, I'm surprised you didn't even touch on the meat of the WSJ story, which is that the main roadblock causing the delays is that the carriers are having difficulty "massaging" Android to limit users' access to the carrier's own services (music, video, etc.).

It will be a lot more difficult than people realize for Android to unseat the iPhone when each carrier is free to cripple the handsets as they see fit. It's the same old song and the same old dance.

Android is indeed the anti-iPhone, but not in so many ways as folks were hoping...
That's a good point. And I think we're going to see more heavy-handed moves by the carriers when the phones finally get released, and users are looking for apps.
Curious what kind of carrier-specific services Sprint is working on. Perhaps they're similar to the extremely helpful services that litter the home screen of my 2005 Sprint Treo, like "Get BC," "GetGood," etc.

It's obvious Sprint's management team's got their head so far up their $#@# that they don't know which way to go ...

The instinct was a flop, I know friends that bought into the marketing bull and now hate sprint and the phone.

If Sprint doesn't get an android phone soon I'm going to T-mobile (despite the bad coverage)
