Amie Street Links Up With The Orchard
To date, Amie Street has only offered music from a handful of well-known artists (one of whom was Eliot Spitzer's pal Ashley Alexandra Dupre). Which means that it's more of a place to go hunting for interesting and off-the-beaten path new stuff -- not stuff you know you want to buy. So landing big deals like the Orchard (ORCD) could be a big help.
Alas, Amie Street won't say how much of the Orchard's catalog it will actually be able to sell, so hard to assess how significant this really is. What would be genuinely impressive is if Amie Street can get one of the four major labels on board. The majors have said they're interested in variable pricing -- much like Amie Street offers -- but haven't actually done a deal that offers that. But we hear optimistic noises that something might happen before the end of the year with at least one of the biggies.

also-to be noted, amie street model only sell downloads, streaming is always free, so if they were to get major labels, they would be somewhat similar to the new myspace-music, except with variable pricing. word is murdoch fronted $120 million to get into this biz, you think amie street can afford it? or perhaps they won't extort that much from them & take equity.

myspace music will have free streams and paid downloads, so not sure about parallel there. much of the money murdoch paid to get myspace off the ground was a payment to settle lawsuit with universal, so same deals won't happen here.
That's exactly what Amie Street is, EXCEPT that paid downloads are priced according to popularity. I see a very strong parallel.
I do find Amie's catalog limited and frustratingly random. But referring to the prostitute's song as an example of the type of music they carry is unfair.
They carry all of Ninja Tunes' stuff, which is pretty significant. And while they have a random assortment of other stuff, for new releases they send out helpful eblasts to point them out.
The whole point of the site is to discover new music, not to go there to buy what you know you want.
