Murdoch: U.S. Economy "In For A Very Hard Time"
News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch, who started becoming pessimistic about the U.S. economy earlier this spring, is now downright gloomy: At his company's D conference Thursday, he predicted that "for the next 18 months, I think this country is in for a very hard time," and that America's woes are spreading to Europe.
So is he optimistic about anything? Yes, he is: He's cautiously intrigued by... Barack Obama. Murdoch, who said that he was responsible for the New York Post's endorsement of Obama during the New York primary, said he wasn't ready to endorse Obama or to vote for him. But he's pretty close: "I want to be convinced that Obama is the real thing, that can really carry through. I'm open to that."
Murdoch offered up his musings during an interview at Dow Jones' "D conference" which focuses on media and technology issues. But given that he now owns Dow Jones, and that he's not shy about offering up his opinions, the conversation was fairly wide-ranging.
For instance, he felt free to play political analyst, pointing out potential hurdles for each candidate this fall: Obama "might not carry Florida, because the Jewish people are suspicious of him, and so are Hispanics... and while people won't talk about it, race will matter." Meanwhile McCain "has been in Congress a long time, and you have to make a lot of compromises. So what's he really stand for?... I think he has a lot of problems."
He also played energy analyst, offering a solution to high gas prices: Encourage oil drilling off the West coast. And for good measure, he defended the lack of a liberal counterpart to Bill O'Reilly on Fox News: He'd hire one if he could find a good one, he argued. What about MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who's now spending much of his time attacking O'Reilly and Fox? "No. I fired him 5 years ago," when he was on FoxSports: "He was crazy."

Fox News will be the main media feed at Dems convention in Denver and Murdoch is just tending his vine. I wonder what will happen if the Dems disappoints the Fox's attempt to look main stream instead of the right wing bullhorn?
For Murdoch it is all business. He the Dems convention to look good and attract more viewers.
Shrewd businessman!!!!!!!!
MANY people endorsed Seantor Clinton when it appeared there were no other choices. If you look back and check now you will find many defections to Obama once it became clear that Senator Clinton was no longer the front runner.
Very little difference in their policies but huge differences in moral values, plan for the future and capability in running their campaigns. Those are the issues that people like Murdoch are drawn to and those are the plans he wants to see more of before endorsing on a personal level.
Senator Obama is asking for the American people to come together and have a hand in planning our future. That's the hope that Hillary despises and makes fun of in her campaign. She has no better nature therefore cannot see it for what it is. That's why people like Murdoch, when given a choice, have gone to Senator Obama.
It's a call to our better natures and not just politics of old. Her use of GOP tactics to attempt to win have turned many off and for the ones still standing by her? Her decision to stay in the race in the event that Senator Obama is assinated was a last straw....and yes before some lunatic comes here and says that is not what she meant...well good luck with THAT argument LOL It was apparent to anyone who could assumilate and accomadate information that it was what she meant.
That said he knows Obama's fans are younger and doesn't want to alienate them.
He raised them after all, Simpsons, Myspace etc...
I wonder if Liz Trotta was aware that her fuehrer was "intrigued" by Obama when she sugested on air that he be shot.
Perhaps the stewardship of the US media shuld be considered a matter of national security interest making it possible to limit the dregree of ownership and control that can be alotted to foreigners.
same information on CNN. The media with the
exception of Keith Olbermann on cable gives us
the real news, yes he has a right to his opinions
that is why his show is NO 1. We will not miss
his shows either to watch live or tape same for
later. If as he says he fired Keith, then that
was a blessing in disguise for now we have him on
MSNBC. He used to be in Los Angeles doing sports
either way he is worth watching.
that is why his show is NO 1. - sally"
Sally you've been drinking too much Kool-Aid...Olbermann is in the cellar. The Factor is first with H&C next on the list followed usually by Shep. Guess you're just another lib tellin lies.
On the Olbermann issue .... I am an older "Broadcast Journalist" with four decades experience who watches the broadcast community with a more critical eye & ear than most - even perhaps Mr. Murdoch.
Mr. Olbermann can indeed 'startle' people with the depth and emotive feeling that he conveys with his commentaries and indeed he is loud and vexatious to the weary at certain times. That being said I will say in his defence that he picks the subjects/topics to comment upon with far greater aplomb and astuteness than almost anyone currently on public airwaves.
His discourse is more attuned to serving those who desire some ‘Intellectual Honesty’ in what they hear and he readily displays that sterling attribute with a greater capacity for that hallmark of occupational qualification than 90% of those who try to feign that they too are professional broadcast journalists.
He did not win an Edward R. Murrow award for nothing and I and others of a like mind appreciate his exercising the skills he has crafted into the daily work of a superior ‘Press’ persona .... One of some credible repute.
Rupert Murdoch is responsible for the 'vulgarization of America' with the visceral hatred spewed by Ireland's potato people who no other country wanted, O'Reilly and Hanity!
For those whose people fought, sacrificed and died for our cherished First Amendment freedoms, including mine, excluding those who work at Fox, it is un-American to tolerate this abuse and lack of respect for our cherished freedoms. Those who embrace these ingrates and their uninformed opinions should have no place in America!
It is time for Rupert Murdoch to return to his country and take his un-American attitude with him! Bon Voyage!
Chagrined
Youse wood bee so erudite if you employed them.
He tells the story as the story deserves to be told. Too many times news casters pander to what the story looks like to the viewers. Keith tells the story the way it relates to him. And that refreshing.
Luv Ya Keith

He's a purveyor of b.s.
Thankfully he's old and he'll SOON get his in hell
Generally his Australian newspapers faithfully toe their master's right-wing dictates. Everything is skewed to his bias, always.
However, he is capable of sentimentality. Don't laugh, it's true. He has one pet newspaper, The Australian which he created whilst he was young and left-wing (I swear on my grandmother's grave that I'm not making this up). So while the Australian, prior to the election was full of anti-Labour Party hysteria, the Party that won. On the actual day of the election it carried a leader saying that a vote for the old and tired Liberal Party would be the waste of a vote. All his other paper's editorials brayed vote Liberal.
All I'm trying to say is: perhaps there is an American newspaper that he is really proud about owning.
Cheers

Ever hear of a guy named George Soros? Go to this site:
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individualProfile.asp?indid=977
Launch the visual maps in the upper right. It's rather interesting to view. He's connected to more anti-american organizations then I care to count.
Soros also helped create the Shadow Party to circumvent McCain-Feingold's soft money ban. Go here for more information:
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6706
And who is trying to control public opinion? Dare I say that it isn't Rurpert Mudoch.
That just means he can, and probably will, later on say that Obama didn't convince him that he's the real thing. Wake up!
Oh, and the US should stop being afraid of Turkey and RECOGNIZE the Armenian Genocide already!!
'He's cautiously intrigued by... Barack Obama.' -- I'm intrigued by O'Reilly, Hannity, etc, but I'm also intrigued by Hitler, Jack the Ripper & the Minnesota cannibal, what ever his name was.. It doesn't MEAN anything about what I support, it's simply intellectual curiosity.
'said that he was responsible for the New York Post's endorsement of Obama' -- he wants to make sure that when Obama wins he can claim part of the victory - this helps offset his obsession with promoting right-wing nut jobs
"I want to be convinced that Obama is the real thing, that can really carry through. I'm open to that." -- If you want to be convinced of something it typically means you doubt it to begin with. His message is 'Obama's a phony and a flash in the pan' Hell, he openly calls him a 'rock star' that's right-wing pejorative. The 'phony' & 'flash in the pan' messages are RW talking points.
Obama "might not carry Florida, because the Jewish people are suspicious of him, and so are Hispanics" -- this is BS propagated by the RW, more RW talking points
"race will matter." --- more of the same agenda the RW is pushing. They are getting drubbed everywhere. The few honest conservative/Failure Party pundits have admitted they are in for a long period of getting their asses handed to them.
McCain "has been in Congress a long time, and you have to make a lot of compromises." -- message: he's experienced and bi-partisan. Not exactly condemnation of McBush.
"So what's he really stand for?... I think he has a lot of problems." -- he takes a shot at McBush, the only genuine thing he says about politics. - Again, the honest pundits admit McBush is going to get creamed in Nov. So, what does it REALLY cost the bastard: NOTHING, in fact he gains by looking like "he's fair and balanced" --- (written with bitter sarcasm)
'offering a solution to high gas prices: "Encourage oil drilling off the West coast."' -- more of the RW nut job agenda, let's make sure we destroy our environment and the ecology our world & coastal economies depend on. It continually boggles my mind that people who profess to be pro-business think like this.
How long is business going to survive if the planet pukes and humans die or less dramatically, if coastal economies are damaged? What is it, 85% of the population of the US coastal?
Besides, by the time the drilling in Anwar, the coastal areas, etc, produces their minimal oil supplies, (compared to our foreign purchases), we need to be far away from needing more oil, for both ecological and national security reasons.
'And for good measure, he defended the lack of a liberal counterpart to Bill O'Reilly on Fox News:' "He'd hire one if he could find a good one" -- how effing good would the liberal have to be to equal the journalistic brilliance of Bill O'Liarly, I ask?
This entire interview is simply pandering to the "rich guy".
I seldom let loose with such venim in blogs or threads as I feel it does more harm than good, but this manipulative bastard embodies what is killing the country I love and what my family and friends have risked their lives and died for. On top of that he has really effed up the Dodgers, a once proud family organization. (I was a part of that organization in the '80's, so it's personal)
Marie's heartfelt lambasting above is also partly responsible for my fervor, (thanks & good work, M): More and more I think I'm getting closer to kicking open the window and screaming "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Murdoch got me chewed up enough I mixed up where I'd been inspired by her -- now I'll have to go back to the Think Progress piece on Mike Allen and 'find some way' to express my gratitude -- LOL

Uh, no. With the oil the is in the Gulf, Alaska, off the coast of Cali, North Dakota, and other places, NOT Including natural gas, we have enough to be energy independent for many, many years.
Most of our oil does not come from unfriendly Middle East country's we're fighting in, anyways. Try Canada, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico.
BTW: The US is either 1st or 2nd in oil production, depending upon the numbers.
Quit spewing your I hate GW, blood for oil rhetoric. It's old. And Wrong.

"The US is either 1st or 2nd in oil production, depending upon the numbers." Where in the heck do you come up with that... it flies in the face of everything I've heard & read... please give me a source...
"Quit spewing your I hate GW" what? IF you mean GW = George W, when did I mention the crime boss? The closest thing to mentioning the crime boss is talking about his clone from Arizona...
"blood for oil rhetoric. It's old. And Wrong." ??? I made an off-hand remark about our dependence on foreign oil having a national security impact... can you explain your logic of that...
I'm at the point in my response where all I can say is: did you actually read what I wrote? I mean, I did re-read it to check for clarity and I did struggle with the phrase you started your comment with, but come on... you're confusing me here...
1st off. I'm sorry. You never did bring up GWB and blood for oil. I made an assumption of that's where you were going, since it always seems to end up there. I leaped to conclusions ... without a net. Sorry.
Regarding the US's oil production. I can't find the source right now or recall if it's the US's production vs. our imported oil. Once I find the source, I'll come back with an update.
Until then, have a good night and a great weekend!
Chris
In the short term, we could reduce a lot of our the national security issues related to Mid-East/Saudi oil if this ridiculous administration didn't seem intent on the same old myth about any moderate, or liberal government in South or Central America - Chavez is a dictator, if Chavez was duly elected in an honest election and is supported by 95% of the indigenous citizens of Venezuela and is a dictator, what does that say about the current POTUS?
Chavez offered crime boss Bush a partnership, offering to sell the US cheap oil in an effort to break the back of OPEC - THAT makes him a dictator?
I need to find the source, but Venezuela either founded or enabled founding of the US's heating oil for seniors assistance program because of the donations Chavez instigated. They are the largest donor to the program. We're blowing it big time in Venezuela and elsewhere in South America.
So keep him away no matter the money. He is just 1 of the major problems that needs to be taken care of like making him sell his monopolies in the media.
anyone that's been paying attention would realized that 1) there are whole sections of this nation that have been in a depression for the last 8 years and 2) the recession of 2001 never ended.
morlock (reference to the cave dwellers of H.G. Well's Time Machine) should shut the fuck up and just go away.
If Barrack becomes President their popularity could easily go out the door... Let's hope so. They endorsed this war 100 percent.
