Intel Chip Delay Could Pinch Apple During Back-To-School Season

/images/macbook.jpgIntel (INTC) has confirmed that some of its Centrino chips for laptops will be delayed due to technical issues, Barron's editor Eric Savitz reports:

Intel now says some versions of the chip will ship July 14, with others coming out in early August, missing the company’s target of a first-half ship date. The company said the delay reflects a problem with the graphic elements of the Montevina chipsets which support the processor. The company also said the delay was caused in part by failure to validate a wireless antenna on the chip with the FCC on time.

This is bad news for Intel customers like Apple (AAPL), which will have to wait several weeks to refresh their laptops with the new chips. (Even if the chips ship in mid-July, it will take longer for computers to ship in large volumes.) Why does the delay matter? Because now Apple probably won't be able to roll out updated MacBooks until mid-to-late summer -- well into the busy (and important) back-to-school shopping season.

A criticism leveled at Steve J is that he's a control freak. Who wouldn't be? He depends on an outside company for THE most critical component of his core business. Can anyone imagine the temper tantrum he had when Paul O gave him the heads up on a chip delay going into the Mac lines heaviest buying season? I've no doubt that Intel's elves will be working triple shifts to get those chips out close to the previously announced release date; Dell and HP will probably get theirs only AFTER the Emperor gets his.

It would hardly be surprising if the Intel's relationship with Apple sours a bit after this, or even goes the way of the woolly mammoth (recall Motorola and IBM, both FORMER chipmakers for the Mac).

As a complete outsider to the industry, this poetaster sees a future in which Apple would buy Intel's chips in bulk, then outsource manufacture of the PA Semi-designed processor.

THIS may have been the reason that Steve resisted Intel for so long: Apple's software is better; Apple's boxes are better, but using the same platform as Dell and HP means that in this one critical area, Apple's competitive edge is blunted
