HTC's Touch Diamond Is No iPhone -- But That's Okay

touch-diamond.jpgTaiwanese smartphone maker HTC showed off its latest answer to Apple's iPhone today -- a slick, touchscreen gadget called Touch Diamond. The phone will go on sale in Europe next month, around the same time Apple is expected to start selling its new iPhone.

Touchscreen phones are nothing new, and HTC has been selling them for a lot longer than Apple's (AAPL) been in the mobile business. But it's not hard to tell exactly where the company got its inspiration for the Touch Diamond -- the user interface, running on top of Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Mobile, looks especially iPhone-like. (The phone itself looks more like a Zune though, no?)

Either way, that's okay! Why? The first HTC Touch sold more than 3 million units in its first 11 months, or more than half as many iPhones as Apple has sold. And that's a keeper, considering it wasn't nearly as sexy as the iPhone -- or the new Diamond -- and didn't have any of Apple's brand caché or marketing push.

Impressive performance without the marketing push. Good to point out that they have been making touch devices way before the iPhone (most people think it is new). But thanks to Apple for making sense of a user interface. Looks to me that unless Apple comes with more development, we may move really quick towards these devices being commodity.

HTC deserves kudos for introducing some very Apple-esque graphics to their phones, but it's all on a layer above Windows Mobile. As soon as you delve one layer down on the HTC "Touch" line of phones, you're in regular old Windows Mobile. Go watch the videos of their interface in action.

Yes, the iPhone is a touch screen phone (and no, Apple was not the first ever, who said they were?), but it is far more responsive and accurate than any other touch screen on the market, the optical-quality glass is without peer, the intelligence of Apple's software keyboard is unmatched on any other touch-screen device, and I won't even go into muti-touch.

The touch screen is only the sheerest veneer on top of the formidable foundation of the new computing platform that is OS X, Cocoa Touch and Safari. It's going to take a lot more than some well-designed icons to turn the iPhone into a commodity product, and that's even before the App Store goes online in June.

Look at the Apple commercials, they do not talk about the platform, they emphasize those key items. So in the eyes of the average person, that is what they are buying. More informed users, who care about the platform will know the differences, but not the majority. Hence, others such as the HTC have been successful. That is why, those key value points can be commoditized.

It is hard to compare the mobile phone market to the computer industry. Buyer utility, behaviour are different. Apple will have to move quicker (and they are) with pricing and model upgrades, to prevent the trap.

LOL@David. All kidding aside, David is quite right. The Touch Devices have been a commodity for years now, well before the iPhone. The iPhone's interface and integration with desktop applications is unprecedented. Currently, there are no cheaper alternatives(or any for that matter) that come even remotely close to delivering a similar user experience.

I'll be joining you guys at the South Street Seaport, when that day comes.

idk that opera browser might be crack compared to safari...my experience tells me opera is full featured(downloading, and most likely flash will be supported)....
multitouch is cool but i think with that dpad, zooming and all that is better and makes it a better one handed device hands down (even taking pictures horizontal)

And their great new super duper touch screen is so good the bottom half bums out on you after half a year ;)

Let's just hope that the competition just keeps heating up more and more.

It will be good for any Apple or Winmobile Avid.

I think legend is right in a way, touchphones were around for ages and apple improved the touchscreen in a revolutionary way. Still I believe HTC is catching up with the diamond. We still have to wait for a in dept review of the phone, but a lot of people would prefer the diamond because of the bluethoot, egps and other wm6 advantages.

Still, I believe wm6 is a sad disappointment given the time it has been around and the experience ms has. We should all hope companies like Apple and HTC encourage ms to come up with something better OR someone to come up with an all new mobile OS with all their advantages combined in one.
