Google’s App Engine Opens For Business (GOOG)

AppEngine.jpegGoogle's cloud-computing-for-rent service App Engine will open to the public today, in conjunction with the company's I/O Developer Conference in San Francisco.

App Engine was originally shown off in beta last month, and more than 150,000 people signed up for the waiting list. The service will be free in "Preview" mode until "later this year," when the following pricing will kick in:

-- Free quota to get started: 500MB storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million pageviews per month
-- $0.10 - $0.12 per CPU core-hour
-- $0.15 - $0.18 per GB-month of storage
-- $0.11 - $0.13 per GB outgoing bandwidth
-- $0.09 - $0.11 per GB incoming bandwidth

Google also says it's working on two new APIs for App Engine: One that lets developers scale, crop, and manipulate images on the server, and another to cache data so pages load faster.

It's hard to argue with the proposition of running your Web app on the same infrastructure that runs Google, and Google's fees are similar to Amazon's (AMZN). So we're curious, web developers: Will you switch your site/apps from Amazon to Google? Why or why not?

Question I've been asking tech-minded folks for a month-plus, but haven't gotten an answer to: Why did Google choose to base Apps in Python instead of Rails, and what will that mean for the developer community?

Peter, Rails is just a web framework built using Ruby. Python is analogous to Ruby, and Django (a highly popular MVC python framework) is analagous to Rails. Although I haven't used it, Google's App Engine seems to use Django's template language, and a similar url handler. The only real difference is on the Model end of things, since they are using the Google datastore rather than a conventional RDBMS.

Python is one of a small number of blessed languages at Google (Java, C++, Python, and Javascript).

Python is widely used beyond web frameworks, and is quite mature.

Because Google already uses Python extensively internally. Google uses Python so much they hired Guido van Rossum, Python's creator and "benevolent dictator for life."

As for the web framework, there are many more choices for Python than for Ruby. Google wrote their own based on Django, but you're free to use another one if you want. Ruby really has Rails and few other choices for web framework.
Thanks Todd, mb. Obviously my tech knowledge ended sometime in the early 80s, when I learned BASIC. But still trying to get a sense of what Google's embrace of Python means in the big picture -- I'm assuming that lots of developers will be trying out Apps, which means much more pickup of Python, which means...what?

Why Python first? For several reasons:
It's an excellent dynamic language.
It's more mature and regular than others (including Ruby).
Python has a lot of work behind. The pypy guys are creating a fast alternative which aims to be as fast as compiled languages.
It's a lot of fun.
Guido Van Rossum works for them.
A lot of companies bought by Google use python extensively.
For many years, Python has been the "secret weapon" of the most successful internet companies.

Computer engineering is a professional vocation and an academic pursuit like mechanical engineering, or chemiststry and physics. I don't know why anyone would think we in this profession would be interested in stupid bubbly toy plane logos and crippled programming environments. Engineers make enough money to afford a VPS or a dedicated server, and know enough to create their own application environment, that is if they're worth their salary. The argument that Google AppEngine that it makes this process unnecessary is thwarted by the massive tradeoffs you have to make. The limits by which you are bound on Google AppEngine are ridiculous. As for the scalability that this thing is supposed to provide: scalabilities issues are a good problem to have, and if you have such a problem I'm sure you have the technical expertise to deal with it.

I can, in closing, say one other good thing about Google AppEngine: I like their 24 hour resources window. Instead of cutting you off for the rest of the month when you run out of resources, you actually have 24 hour limits, and after enough time passes, a few hours, your site comes back up if you maxed out earlier. Makes more sense. Besides that, the thing is a joke.
