Google Confirms Plans To Put Display Ads On Google.com

marissamayerbig.jpgThe most pressing question for Google (GOOG) shareholders is what product will drive the company's next growth boom as the search product cycle ends. Most likely candidate? Not sexy mobile or video. Just boring old display ads.

Google has been serving display ads on other sites for years, and the DoubleClick acquisition will accelerate that effort. Third-party display ads will only make a small contribution to the bottom line, however (10-20 cents on the dollar). So the key question here has been whether Google would deign to put display ads on its own sites.

We've argued that a full load of display ads on Google.com could add $3-$4 billion in annual revenue. Many SAI readers considered this estimate too optimistic, and it might be, at least over the next couple of years. But $1-$2 billion seems easily achievable.

Most importantly, Google itself is now talking explicitly about display ads on Google.com. It will start small--placing display ads on, for example, image search results. But we imagine that display ads will gradually spread throughout Google.com over the next few years.

Here's Marissa Mayer (from Bloomberg, via John Battelle):

Matching graphical-display ads with image searches ``represents a large opportunity, and there's lot of potential for advertising revenue there,' Marissa Mayer, a Google vice president, told Bloomberg Radio today. At the same time, the company must ensure such ads don't drive users away, she said...

 

``We haven't found a proper way to monetize image search to date,'' said Mayer, who oversees search products. ``You may see us roll out an ads-image search in the future, but when we do you'll know that's because we found a way that ultimately enhances user happiness with the product.''

Google calculated in 2006 that it was giving up as much as $200 million a year by not including text advertisements with its image search results, and that figure has probably increased since, Mayer said. Trials showed that text ads drove people away from conducting image searches, and Google dropped that idea.

Display ads may work better with image searches because they seem more natural to people looking for pictures, Mayer said. While the company has done mock-ups of how it might present the ads, it hasn't tested them on users, she said....

``DoubleClick's strength in display advertising and their work in brand advertising we think ultimately may mean we'll have a better set of options in terms of image ads to run on image search,'' she said.

Pretty sure this is principally limited to their mobile search product. They've been trying to figure out a way to make money with all the mobile traffic they're seeing and the limitations for text doesn't work.

I'd be horribly shocked if they put it on their Google.com main site.

Placing display ads on Google.com is another sign that their US growth is stalled and other revenue streams are not materializing.

Would Google have succeeded in capturing share in the early days if they had a big, fat CPM ad on the homepage? My guess is no. Probably won't "hurt" them now but its a sign that experience is losing the battle against revenue.

It's hard to imagine how this will benefit the user (unless they are a google shareholder). This move feels very MicroSoft-y.

Dan, I think your point is an important one. I almost never search from the google homepage. I use the google toolbar search box or I use iGoogle. In the case of iGoogle, Google has a sense for a user's preferences (based on tab/widget choices) and could actually put up targeted/useful ads.

They are simply talking about testing it on their image search.

Of course Google is going to test new formats. These are indeed very smart people. However the fundamental consumer behavior of search is to go to the results and them go (click) to somewhere else. Hence the importance of SEO, SEM and getting ranked high. Also pay the most per click so you can commercially be at the top (ask any asbestos attorney)

Years ago at DCLK (way before google even existed) Kevin O'Conner founder, CEO and an extremely smart and down to earth guy believed strongly that viewers wanted to see graphic ads (46x 60, 12k gif) and turned down some text testing opportunites on Alta Vista. Perhaps in hindsight an error but who knew.

Google will test display ads (esp on google images) as they should but consumer behavior on search engines and expectations will keep text ads. Would google want to hear google ads and pages load slow on blogs, wom sites, and the trade and consumer press.

Peopel want google to fail -part of being the 800lb gorilla. I bet google Mgmt are very well aware of this

Text ads load real fast -no delay. Can not state that about large file and/or rich media display ads. Even google images load real fast -no flash here.

Certainly will be interesting to follow
