Facebook Gets More New Blood: CTO Adam D'Angelo Out

Adam D'Angelo.jpg Facebook's CTO, 23-year-old Adam D'Angelo, is leaving the company to "take time off", Kara Swisher reports (Venturebeat's Eric Eldon wants us to know that he knew, too, but was inexplicably sitting on the story). The company isn't formally replacing him, but is instead hiring a VP of Engineering.

This comes shortly after Facebook's decision toborrow $100 million to bulk up on servers, but for all we know that's only coincidence. We do know that the bigger the company grows, and the closer it gets to an IPO, the more pressure will increase on Mark Zuckerberg to bring in a seasoned group of managers (see: Sheryl Sandberg).

Thanks for the shout-out, Peter! I was holding back because I was hoping to hear back from Facebook -- because another source told me that D'Angelo was maybe just gonna take an extended vacation. Facebook got back to me after Kara published. Oh well, next time.

This is a crucial time for Facebook -- and Adam did nothing to keep the product from becoming a tangled mess of undocumented code that doesn't scale. I'm still sure their approach is to throw capex at the problem, which does nothing to solve it and ultimately will slaughter their margins. They already have 8x the server capacity that MySpace had at this level of scale, and soon it'll be closer to 75x if they put $100mil down that drain. Somebody needs to crack the whip, and it's clear D'Angelo didn't have the stones (heck, he created much of the problem). Pray for someone with discipline.

I've been saying for some time now that there's something wrong with this picture, now the picture is becoming clearer. These guys have a total re-write on their hands and are worried about how much this will cost and how long it will take. They're NOT buying $500M worth of servers. No one can actually believe that.

Facebook has serious tech problems, which doesn't bode well for young Mr. Zuckerberg. Isn't that his area? It's certainly not PR.

No start-up will ever need $500M unless there are some serious issues. Facebook is facing less than expected revenue and greater than expected technology costs --- not a pretty picture.

Ha, good eye Buck. What talent Yahoo had saw the writing on the wall and already left (or was lost in layoffs).

But yeah, when a company has to BORROW to cover its operating costs, that's a very bad sign... They'll need to have their IPO ASAP if they want to be able to cash out before the last of their funding is burned. Of course, after Web 1.0, most investors aren't too eager to buy into something that still has no sustainable business plan.

LinkedIn, on the other hand, is in the green and doing quite well (and not stooping to taking on debt in order to cover operating costs -- Ahem).

When are they having an IPO? I'd like to throw some $ at that!!
