CBS Pulls Five More Old Shows From Vault, Throws Them Online (CBS)

90210.jpgGot a hankering to watch a prime-time soap opera online, but “Desperate Housewives” just doesn’t do it for you? Head over to CBS.com, which is now serving up episodes  of "Beverly Hills 90210."

CBS has added select seasons from five old shows to CBS.com and the “CBS Audience Network” which includes AOL (TWX), CNET, Joost, VideoEgg, Slide, RockYou and a couple hundred others. In addition to the saga of the Brandon and Brenda Walsh, you can also catch up on "The Love Boat", "Twin Peaks", "Family Ties", and "Perry Mason". CBS also added seasons to three series that they already had online: "MacGyver", "The Twilight Zone", and "Hawaii Five-O".

This is a no-brainer. Sales of TV shows on DVDs are already declining, and hardcore fans are going to be the shows on disc, anyway. So this is just found money. If CBS is lucky, the shows may get a new following online -- like Arrested Development and Speed Racer on Hulu.

Our complaint: Unlike Hulu, CBS.com doesn’t allow you to embed episodes, so we had to go to YouTube to find the Love Boat opening sequence. See you on the Lido Deck.

While I applaud CBS for putting more shows online, this only demonstrates that they are still out of touch with consumers. There was a time where I might have tuned into a random episode of Family Ties or 90210, but Netflix and TiVo have spoiled me. If I can't watch an entire series from beginning to end, I won't bother watching even a single episode. Since they are only putting select seasons online, it makes all that much more difficult to finish the show and because they have a nasty habit of removing programs later on, it would make me worry about making that type of time commitment only to see the content pulled in a month. Hulu might be good for catching a missed episode or a quick TV snack, but all of the unnecessary restrictions make it so much less appealing than it could be.

Davis, what restrictions at Hulu? The only problem I've noticed so far is that for some reason they don't always have complete seasons: News Radio Seasons 1-3, for instance, are each missing a couple of episodes. But then again, I get to watch News Radio, for free!

Since these are series show and there are many episodes, why do they not make it easier for us consumers and let us download them so that we can watch them whenever/wherever. Portability is key as why would I want to trade one set top box (TV) for another (my computer)? I want to watch these oldies while waiting at the airport/on the plane.

Re: episode availability (or lack thereof) - many of these shows are encumbered by agreements written when 'digital distribution' meant mailing Atari cartridges. In some cases the rights holder for a particular piece of music, for instance, might be tough to locate or deal with- causing holes in season availability.

Hulu has plenty of restrictions, the biggest being that you can't download any of the content so that you can watch it on your TV or take it on the go. Making fans wait a week before shows are posted online is another unnecessary restriction (see Battlestar Gallatica). Not allowing international viewers to view Hulu content is yet another example of suckage. Keeping the platform closed to user generated content (or at least premium content from smaller publishers) is another way that they limit the service with their walled garden approach. None of this takes away from what Hulu has accomplished, but it does show how far the studiios need to go before they can offer a decent alternative to piracy.

Personally, I have no interest in what Valleywag refers to as "loser-gen" content; Hulu has shows I actually want to see, displayed in great quality, with few commercials. And for videos of cats peeing, there is always YouTube.
