AT&T Doles Out The Free Wi-Fi To iPhone Users (T)

Starbucks iPhoneToday, 7,000 Starbucks (SBUX) stores switch to AT&T for Internet access. And that means that 12 million AT&T DSL and U-Verse subscribers get free Wi-Fi access. Not to mention all the users at other AT&T hotspots. And AT&T has decided to extend the offer to iPhone (AAPL) owners as well.

This is a nice bonus for iPhone users, who are already shelling out $60 a month for service, but not a huge deal. Yes, Wi-Fi is faster than Edge, but it is a huge battery life glutton on the iPhone. So you can surf faster, but for less time.

So why not let iPhone users -- who are, of course, AT&T subscribers -- surf the hotspots using their laptops, as well? No idea.

But turns out AT&T is doing just that -- just not intentionally. MacRumors is reporting that iPhone users can also trick AT&T into giving them free Wi-Fi for their laptops by via a "spoofing" trick. Instructions are here.

Not that we condone such behavior.

I surf with WiFi on my iPhone all the time, with access nearly anywhere I go here in North Beach (SF), and I get no noticeable drop in battery life. My experience is certainly anecdotal, but what is your indictment based on?

Use my iPhone on Wi-Fi frequently have never noticed a huge drain. For most NYers using the iPhone at SBUX will be limited to the time waiting to order your drink and have it prepared (usually 5 minutes or less) so the battery life should pretty much be a non-issue anyway.

This is great, but for those with laptops, you can still get 2 free hours of wifi per day. As stated on the Starbucks website -- and as you guys reported here a while back -- "When you register your Starbucks Card and use it at least once a month, you'll receive two consecutive hours a day of complimentary Wi-Fi, courtesy of AT&T."

Plus free refills on coffee. Sounds like a good deal to me, and easier than using a "spoofing" trick for anyone who's gonna be there less than 2 hours.
