Apple iPhone: More Powerful Than 1998 iMac, WAY More Powerful Than 1984 Macintosh

|

imac-hello-again.jpgApple's (AAPL) original, "Bondi blue" iMac turns ten this week, Valleywag's Nicholas Carlson reminds us. Apple's first Macintosh, meanwhile, is about 24.

On May 6, 1998, back-from-exile "iCEO" Steve Jobs announced the iMac, which started shipping on August 15 of that year.

A decade later, it's obvious that Apple's current iMac is more powerful than the original iMac. But so is the iPhone! And it is one hell of lot more powerful than the state-of-the-art Macintosh circa 1984.

Wow great insight - what's next, a comparison of a car and a horse drawn chariot.

Oh, come on. Tell me you at least found the reminder of price difference worth the 6 seconds.

That $2,500 you spent on the 1984 Mac would be at least $5,000 today. And here we are pissing and moaning about $400 iPhones (as we should be!)

It was as worth as me seeing the NY Post headline yesterday saying "Lindsay Lohan stole my coat"

Well, I think it's cool.

But you have to point out one thing -- those 1984 Macs were durable. The one my parents had back then still works. I'll bet that won't be true of the iPhone 10 years from now.

I think this is a cool post. People who insult on blogs anonymously don't deserve to have their opinions counted. If you can't put your name where your words are, then either you are a coward or a liar. This is true unless you spend a lot of time in a politically repressive environment like China, Russia or an office.

@ Bjorn - Now who is insulting there. All I gave was an opinion of the information provided, did not berate Dan in anyway (I actually like his other postings), just that this does not add much value. I believe that it is common knowledge that as time goes by, computing power has become cheaper and smaller. Just look at the computing power of the space shuttle, the size, the cost, and compare it to a desktop today. That was my point, interesting maybe, nothing ground breaking. And no I am not in China or Russia, and it is presumptive of you to think that. PS, my name is Einstein, and I am not a coward or liar (not sure how that applies in this case - try another word).

My god Einstein... they're just having a little fun with this story. It's a fucking fluff piece. You know, the real Einstein was a hell of a lot more fun that you are...

@ David - was having fun with it (I said it was interesting), can't a guy get a little jab in there without getting called a person living in China, Russia, or called a coward or liar. Hey you never hung out with the real Einstein, don't let the movie Young Einstein fool you

I wouldn't be so quick to say "Advantage: iPhone" on the display.

The iMac had a much larger display with a higher (albeit less dense) resolution. Since input is a separate category, you can't use the multi-touch as an excuse, and the significance of LCD over CRT is also debatable.

Just playing devil's advocate!

Interesting that the price drops by 50% each time... maybe there is some inverse pricing corollary to Moore's law at play here?
