Android Developers: Mad As Hell, Definitely Going To Keep Taking It (GOOG)

AndroidGoogle hasn't announced the results of its Android Developers Challenge -- that happens later this month -- but it's already getting grief from contestants who are sure that they're not going to get a cut of the $5 million in prize money.

What are their complaints? Basically, they don't like the contest they entered of their own accord:

  • Google (GOOG) has appointed a single point person to handle developer queries. Apparently he's not getting back to them fast enough.
  • Google hasn't told them if they've won yet or not.
  • Google hasn't told them who's judging the contest, so they don't know whom to complain to.
  • Google hasn't convinced them that the contest isn't rigged.

Forgive us if we seem less than sympathetic. But we do have a good solution for developers who are worried that Google won't address these terrible problems before the second round of the Challenge: Don't enter.

That doesn't mean that developers need to walk away from Android, as they're threatening to do. Unlike Apple (AAPL), which is tightly controlling third-party apps created for the iPhone, Google isn't gating access to its mobile platform. So you don't have to win Google's contest to get people using your Android app. You just have to make something people like.

Nope. You missed the reason why they are mad.

Many of the applications accessed the contestants' servers. Log files on these servers are showing that these applications are not being run. Judging is being done based on readme files.

With respect to "Google hasn't told them who's judging the contest, so they don't know whom to complain to", bear in mind that there's supposed to be a whole boatload of judges (a bunch of teams judging a subset of the apps, then one more team judging the top 100 coming out of the first set fo teams). Even if they just listed them, you wouldn't be able to complain to them without knowing which were the ones who might have been responsible for judging your application.

They read the report you wrote (and Google ask for a full report, not for readme files ...) and then, if it looks like a good idea, they ask you to show your application (that's why Google asked for podcast, etc.).
And after that only, they may consent to test your app.

That's what companies do everytime in the real life and that's the way Google chose for its challenge and that's the way whe (should have) learned during studies.

There are many reasons why we were frustrated with the Android Developer Contest. It was probably impossible for Google to run a completely fair contest given their constraints.

The one major flaw is that there were so many entrants and so few judges that each application was only given a brief review, in comparison to the amount of time the developers spent creating the applications. The second major flaw was that the judges were selected from the Open Handset Alliance, instead of, e.g., having potential consumers try out the applications. This means the judges are bringing a huge set of biases and preconceived notions to the table.

If a similar contest for "new and innovative web sites" had been held in 1998, do you think Google itself would have won? It doesn't matter, because Google provided a service that consumers found valuable, and the market picked the winner.
