Hot On YouTube: Video Clips China Doesn't Want You To See

youtube-china.jpgThe most popular videos on the Web are usually music videos, low-brow jokes and faux porn. But occasionally something more weighty bubbles up: Last month it was Barack Obama's speech on race. An early candidate for popular spring and summer videos: Clips embarassing China in the runup to the summer Olympics.

Last week, five clips, including ones below from the BBC and Al Jazeera, made it into the low-600s in TubeMogul's list of the Web's most popular videos. That's nothing compared to a clip featuring, say, Jordin Sparks (No. 7 with 1.38m views last week), but TubeMogul says they're seeing more and more turn up each week.

Unfortunately for China's state-run image aparatus, it's the first summer games of the YouTube (GOOG) era, and Tibet's international cadre of enthusiasts are net-savvy and active.

I find it hilarious how biased this blog post is. I can't believe that videos in the "low-600s" had to be trawled up to substantiate the article's claims.

Moreover, selecting just anti-China/Olympics videos is incredibly myopic given the much greater popularity of videos supporting the Chinese government and the Beijing Olympics. A cursory look at Youtube's most popular videos for the month show:

"Tibet WAS,IS,and ALWAYS WILL BE a part of China" with over 2.6 million views (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9QNKB34cJo), and ironically "Riot in Tibet: True face of western media" with over 1.2 million views (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQnK5FcKas). These are a select few among MANY other videos with easily more views than your selected examples.

I guess the Chinese aren't as repressed or Youtube-phobic as you thought?

The Tibetan monks' pr people might respond Shum's propagandistic comment above if they weren't likely detained at the moment. I'm all for evenhandedness, but it's tough to argue in favor a government that requires the next "spiritual leader" of Bhuddism to be approved by the Communist Party.

Low 600's for a week on YouTube is an accomplishment, especially when you take into account the competition: Ford Models, boxing/soccer highlights, Leona Lewis.

David: You made my day. Haha what to say, except that you are claiming that monks are locked up in an article that embeds a video showing what Tibetan monks are saying, to Chinese media to boot. I don't think that anyone can say that the Tibetans have not had fair (and more than ample) media coverage.

The thought of Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao furiously clicking away to up the view count on an amateur Youtube video is priceless. Thank you.

1. "TIBET WAS, IS.." was posted March 16 and has 2.5mm views.. I guess in 11 days the monks will catch up.

2. "Riots in Tibet.." was posted March 19 and has 1.25mm views..

Let's look at a few videos posted AFTER your monk video:

3. "Dragon Roar", a Chinese political rap (http://youtube.com/watch?v=bgioDT-r0QY). Posted April 5th, 170k views.

4. "Tibet: The Truth" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xsoc4-QnplY). Posted April 5th, 185k views.

The list really does go on.. there is a DEFINITE rise in pro-China videos, although I'm sure Dave there will have you convinced that they're because of click farms and that I'm secretly a Communist spy.

Oh and at least those videos are home-made for the most part. I hardly see how a report from Al-Jazeera makes "Tibet's international cadre of enthusiasts" "net-savvy and active".

Congratulations you can read! Of course Tibet is in China, and Tibetans (at least their spiritual leader) maintain that they only seek their religious freedom. What would they do with a homeland? Given that small demand, China seems inordinately petty and heavy-handed. But then again China never was known for subtlety, how many people died in the "Great Leap forward"? Why does China fear a bunch of monks? China fears that once people recognize the fascist nature of the Chinese government that the ruling elite's days will be numbered.
