Google (GOOG) Buying Digg (Again)

|

jayadelson2.jpgGoogle (GOOG) is in talks to buy Digg, Kara Swisher says. This assertion has been made with varying degrees of conviction around the Valley for the past few months, including by Kara and TechCrunch.

The topic has also triggered an odd-couple Valley reporting boxing match: For example, Kara lambasted TechCrunch's Michael Arrington for saying that Microsft and Google were in a "bidding war," and that Google would win for "$225 million."

We await Digg's usual denial.

Another content play for Google. Similar to them buying YouTube although must less impactful.

Much less impactful, but a big move nonetheless. Yahoo! recently got into this "recent hype" hysteria by launching their "BUZZ" section. It is far, far from Digg seeing as that users can't submit their own articles and whatnot. But, Google has NO presence in that market.

Awhile ago, DIGG was primarily for technology geeks. They recently changed their algo after adding Videos, Pictures and some other things to make it more "balanced". Their have been mixed results but most people do NOT like it as much.

If their is ONE thing Google knows about... it is algorhythms.

Webmasters already CRAVE traffic from digg, which can bring many tens of thousands of visitors when hitting the front page. So you must ask yourself... if being ON digg front page brings tens of thousands... how much traffic is Digg itself getting?

I think DIGG would be a huge addition to Google's portfolio and they could reduce the impact of people "gaming" the system for sure.

It's funny because we were worried about "evil" msft messing up Yahoo and now "good" Google could make Digg less elite...Hopefully

I think DIGG is a joke and not a serious company. Why in the world would people want to use such a site? I don't get it.

On the surface, it is indeed hard to see how digg can bring value to google. google search is their bread-winner and it is THE starting point for users, why would google acquire something to distract users?

But i must say digg's other features in its lab are amazing. it has enterprise market potential, especially in entertainment market. Check it out:
