Amazon Reboots Kindle Sales, Blows Up Ebay Aftermarket (AMZN)

amazonfrontpage.jpgAmazon (AMZN) says it has resolved its production problems with the Kindle, and is now offering the e-book reader again for immediate shipping. Someone should tell the poor speculators at Ebay who are still trying to sell the gizmo for more than Amazon's $399 list price.

As always, we remain very curious about how much demand for the Kindle there really is: We were initially skeptical that the gadget would have many fans, but have since heard anecdotal evidence that people do in fact like the Kindle, and buy ebooks for it, to boot.

That said, the most interesting thing in Fortune's news-free Jeff Bezos profile last week was its description of the Kindle as a "misfire": Bezos and his people cooperated with Fortune and used the story to broadcast their intentions to beef up their digital offerings as well as their AWS developers services. If they were truly excited about the Kindle's prospects, we have a hunch we would have heard more about it.

I have a feeling there's going to be a bit of a Prius phenomenon here -- one day there impossible to get unless you pay a big premium, and a year later they are everywhere. I have a somewhat different take on the numbers:

Back in December I published an article which is now the #2 selling title in the Kindle store, about how to use the Kindle for email and various other gadget aspects, and through yesterday Amazon had sold 6,640 "copies" of the article's Kindle edition. After averaging 50 to 100 copies a day the previous 3 months, the article's sales have blown through the roof, set new highs with 970 in the past 5 days, and placed in the nonfiction top 10 in the main Amazon store. Somebody who knows his way around algorithms better than me could probably take that data and ballpark the sales of the device itself, but my take is that this is not misfire for Jeff and his minions.

I recall reading that Amazon is dual-sourcing the displays, but PVI is one of the primary EPD display manufacturers. Kindle shipments were also disturbed for a month in Feb., presumably because of the snowstorms in China. This is utter speculation, but perhaps there are 300k or so out in the wild by this point? I'd like to see one, but no one I know has dropped the $$$ for it.
