"Dell's Still a Dog"--Barrons

michaeldell.jpgDell (DELL) deserves an Ingram-Micro stock multiple (9X), a hedge-fund manager argues in Barrons, not an IBM or HP multiple (14X). This revaluation would take the stock from $20 to $15.

The logic?

  • Dell's consumer business is still losing money,
  • Dell's financing business is the tech equivalent of a sub-prime mortgage lender
  • Not as strong internationally as HP
  • Changing business model (direct to direct/retail hybrid)
  • Operating expenses soaring despite flat headcount

Fair enough. But unlike IBM and HP, Dell at least has some low-hanging fruit to pick. And if economic weakness finally hits HP and IBM, their multiples will likely drop to Ingram-Micro multiples, too.

HP (HPQ) retained its no. 1 spot in both firms' worldwide estimates, but grew shipments slower than rival Dell (DELL). Gartner, for example, said HP shipped 12.99 million PCs last quarter worldwide, up 17.5% year-over-year. Meanwhile, it says Dell shipped 10.58 million PCs worldwide during Q1, up 21.8% year-over-year.

They say what goes round, comes a round. They deserve to lose money. You can only take advantage of your customers for just so long before they tell you to "get screwed" and rightly so!

I have allot of Small businesses In which we manage their networks, I Make damn sure none of my customers have DELLS! Their customer service sucks, their Equipment sucks, I can't even begin to tell you how many of their power supplies and hard drives I have had replaced in the last year. They are not the cheapest Machines and but Definitely the cheapest built machines.

They need to take a hit, Bring them back down to where they should be.
