The Internet Loses Its President: Farewell, Ron Paul
For his hardcore supporters, the last year of the "Ron Paul Revolution" has offered an exhilarating glimpse into netroots activism and the persuasive power of Libertarian ideals. The rest of us found it pretty funny.
Now we're all out of luck. In a statement to his supporters on his website, Ron says he's pulling the plug: "Though victory in the conventional political sense is not available in the presidential race, many victories have been achieved."
He's actually right about that. The obscure Texas Congressman with fringe politics used the Web to raise a staggering $30 million dollars. And if the election was held on the Internet, Ron could be planning his inaugural address. At one point, Ron Paul's YouTube videos accounted for five of the top 10 candidate videos, with the largest overall viewership of any candidate.
But in the real world, none of that mattered much. Ron was rarely was able to register more than 15% in the Republican primaries and caucuses.
So now we bid Ronulans a fond farewell. From their perplexing conspiracy theories to their bizarre embrace of 19'th century monetary policy, Paul's supporters ran one of the most interesting political sideshows in a century. But it's time for Ron Paul to board his dirigible and sail into the sunset.

I just attended my county Republican convention this weekend and I have to say, I was very pleased by what I saw there.
First off, the lawn outside the convention center was carpeted by campaign signs from all of the candidates. I am pleased to say that Ron Paul signs dominated the landscape! I would say that for every sign a candidate had up, we had at least three. Kudos to Carl Bruining for equipping the supporters in this region to get the word out!
As I went into the convention (I am a county and congressional delegate) to be seated, I saw a lot of local politicians had booths. What I did not see was McCain very well represented. Ron Paul’s booth was big and informative (there was always a group standing there). Huckabee also had a booth, but it was not as well attended.
The first person who got up to speak was Marilyn Musgrave, Congresswoman from the 4th Congressional District in Colorado. She really tried to sell everyone there on the idea of John McCain as the nominee. Funny thing is, it did not look like her heart was in it. She was merely towing the party line. People in the audience were actually standing up and denouncing her words (not too rudely, but vocal none the less). Other than Musgrave, there was only one person who got up and spoke for McCain and I think he was the last minute/only choice of speaker for McCain.
This man got up and actually used words and phrases like “Constitution,” and “return to conservative values,” when referring to McCain. He said he was upset that he was the only one who wanted to get up and speak for McCain. Poor, deluded man…
What really lifted my hopes was when Carl Bruining got up and spoke for Dr. Paul. Every time he spoke of Dr. Paul’s platform, the room erupted in applause.
Here is why my hopes are up…
As I sat there, I realized that most of the delegates in that room were Ron Paul supporters.
We had pulled off what nobody yet realizes…we had the majority of delegates!
I cannot wait for State and Congressional…and the National convention! If this is an indicator, we are in the calm before the storm. When the convention in Minneapolis happens, the world will be stunned. Why? Because we have quietly infiltrated the party and we are taking it over.
Hang in there folks…the battle seems to have been lost, but the war is far from over. While they think we are in defeat, we are marshaling our forces for the great battle to be fought in Minnesota. The fight that will take back our party and ultimately, our nation.
What is radical is voting without truly understanding who or why you are voting.
It's radical to believe that other people have a RIGHT to vote themselves benefits from YOUR paycheck.
It's radical to blow up other nations who have not attacked us.
It's radical to start a war with no intention of naming a concrete enemy.
It's radical to force everyone to get a national ID card and carry their papers..and leave our borders wide open...but then the threat is really in your television and not your neighbor.
It's radical to look at history replaying in your face and deny it's so.
The Radicals now control our media and parties.
Real americans will put them back in their place sooner or later. I pray people wake up before it gets too nasty.

What are these "perplexing conspiracy theories" you speak of? I was more a mainstream supporter so I'm completely unaware of what you're talking about, even though I've watched tons of Ron Paul videos and know exactly where he stands on just about everything.
What is so "bizarre" about backing the dollar against gold, balancing the budget, and running a smaller, tighter, more accountable government?

Do you not know the Conservative platform of the Republican Party when you fall over it?
True conservatism started in the party in the mid '50's, if I'm correct, and liberal bias has crept into it slowly and surely ever since. But you wouldn't know that. Obviously.
Ron Paul is a Libertarian with such a strong Conservative Republican streak that for all intents and purposes that's about what he is.
Even the slightest smidgeon of knowledge about each party's platform would have prevented you from describing his platform as even nominally "fringe".
He may not be so well-known or popular away from the Internet, but his conservative leanings are among the purest form of non-BS Conservative politics out there.
Heck, even I knew that, and I'm a Democrat - at least I am according to my voter registration card - go figure!
And yeah, if you haven't figured it out yet, I think this post does us fans of Ron Paul a huge disservice. It is insulting, inaccurate, and highly ungracious. It's a great way to turn off the Ron Paul fans, though, which is like half the people who use the Internet. Genius.
Except they won't be called RFID chips. They'll be called Happy Chips, if Hillary gets it. Or they'll be called National Security Entitlement Tags, if McCain gets it.

Ron didn't have radical ideas, he just presented them radically with his rhetoric and this scared away the majority of the nation. I am also one who desires some of what he speaks of, especially less government. But that is supposed to be what the republic party stood for, whatever happened to that?
I applaud him and Gov. Huckabee for bringing fresh perspectives in such as the Fair Tax, free market (an idea that has been lost recently), protecting the borders, constitutionality, etc. But you saw what the media did, Ron Paul is a crazy radical and Huckabee is a Christian conservative that only evangelicals want and nobody else. From the start only McCain and Romney were viewed as authenticate candidates because they conform to what government should be, in the eyes of the media.
The democratic candidates offer nothing new either.
The Fed is doing a bang-up job keeping our economy sailing smoothly! It's trucking right along, theres been hardspots but its all coasting downhill from here!

No Fed to carefully guide us through our recessions? (The Fed is made up of wise older gentleman with nothing but your best interest in mind.) The dollar backed by gold? (As if it's not worth a dollar today- read the ink people- it says One Dollar!
No income tax? How would us poor working stiffs get enough money if the government doesn't have our money to give to us? (Nothing like a shiny stimulus package to open!) Some people just don't appreciate the "service" of the Internal Revenue Service.
No war in Iraq; no fixing all the problems in the world? Non-intervention? Sheesh look at all the peace breaking out because of our sophisticated and compassionate foreign policies. Who has enough weapons and lives to keep spreading the peace if not us?
Anyway- what the heck were Paul-People thinking?
Onto prosperity as we utilize our fine-tuned modern monetary system; Peace & Democracy march-on due to our globally respected foreign policy; and our Rights & Liberties are being protected fron those horrid terrorists as we surrender them to our trusted government one-by-one for safekeeping.

My point is you can try to make yourself feel better by belittling his more fervent supporters (every political camp has them), but you're only fooling yourself. The man broke single-day fundraising records, from the sheer volume of small-time donors. Does that sound "fringe" to you?
2011?! Hell! It's happening now! I'm just waiting for Nov 9th whan I can put the, "Don't blame me. I voted for Ron Paul." bumper sticker on my car.
Just like people keep re-electing their Representative (Ron Paul included) but complain about the screwed up Congress, people like all the "services" they get from government. The only real debate for most people is how to get more stuff for lower cost. They don't want less government, they want cheaper government. But that is not what Ron Paul was selling.
Unfortunately, the majority of this country has become so accustomed and hypnotized by political spin/BS, drama, the MSM/'news' and entitlement, that common sense thinking has become radical.
