PS3's World Domination Plan: A Baby Step (SNE)
Sony is making an incremental move toward its long-held goal: Turning the PlayStation 3 into an entertainment hub. A free update later this month will allow users to download mini-games and movie clips/trailers. That's nice. But it's still not nearly as useful as the Xbox 360 (MSFT), which downloads and plays entire movies. Not to mention Apple's iTunes(AAPL) and a host of other offerings.
So why wouldn't Sony (SNE) do the same? We don't know. The PS3 is already a powerful home entertainment device, via its Blu-ray DVD player. Why not make it even more compelling?
Sony wouldn't want to try HD movies via download, because the transfer speeds would be way too long for the machines' ADD owners. But said owners are pretty tech-savvy, too: They understand why couldn't get HD over the Web -- for now. But they'd probably be happy to watch Spider-Man 3 in standard def, too. Wait a minute -- no, they wouldn't.

I also have my PS3 connected to my mac through medialink and stream itunes, movies, photos etc with no problem. And with remote play I can then connect to my PS3 or mac and stream their content to my psp anywhere in the house over my private network or anywhere in the world through the internet and a wifi spot. Also I can remote play PS3 games like pixeljunk monsters on my psp should I want to use either of these devices for say a game whilst I wait for play tv to arrive and turn my PS3 and psp into a digital pvr that I can access anywhere.
Sounds like Sony really thought about this move and just keep laying down more aces.
What does the new PS3 patch do? download games and trailers? Like the PS3 has been able to do for the last year and a half?
And what the hell is with the ADD joke? are you twelve?
The whole thing is written like a angsty forum post, and a complete waste of time.
Of course the PS3 has been able to download games and trailers from the Playstation Network since day one. The point of this update is you'll be able to download not merely stuff from Sony, but from Sony's Film studios too... once you've bought the Blu-ray disc... um...
... or something equally pointless. To me, and speaking as a PS3 owner, Blu-ray is looking more and more like a solution without a problem.
upscaled, low bitrate crap = ftl.

everything he said about the Xbox 360. is wrong M$ even said it wont down load from Apple?? and since when would a Xbox down load whole movies any faster than a PS3?? everything I run is way beyond what the 360.. dude step away from the pipe.. get help..
Firstly, this update to download minigames and videos you speak of is for Blu-ray profile 2.0, which will allow you to pop in, say Walk Hard and download, I don't know, some deleted scenes or something, I don't know really. It was like that on HD DVD too.
The PSN itself is fully capable of full-sized games like Warhawk and SOCOM, and there are many 1080p movie trailers all of which are free downloads.
Someone needs to take your keyboard away.
This journalist just got totally OWNED. ADD that.
The only things they really do differently is game play and even here each one has it's plus and minuses. A lot of which has to do with the game itself and not the platform.
I have yet to download any movies from xbox live mainly because I think they charge way to much for rentals. I could see maybe $1 a rental but they are charging as much as $6 bucks for some which is way too much of a rip off. There is no manufacturing cost and for them to be charging that much is robbery. I can go to blockbuster and pay $20 a month and get unlimited rentals with 3 movies at a time.
Why pay $6 to "rent" a movie when you can buy it eventually for less than $10 bucks anyway. The only way this kind of marketing will ever work is if they release content strictly to the console.
