Your iPod May Come With Something Extra: A Virus

ipod.jpgFirst lead in your toys, now viruses on your iPods (AAPL). The AP reminds us that viruses have been found preloaded on some iPods, digital picture frames sold at Target, Best Buy, and Sam's Club, and TomTom Navigation gear – most of which came from Chinese factories.

How big is the problem? Who knows? The AP sort of shrugs. But it does suggest that the viruses haven't been installed maliciously:

So far, the virus problem appears to come from lax quality control - perhaps a careless worker plugging an infected music player into a factory computer used for testing - rather than organized sabotage by hackers or the Chinese factories.

But that won't appease anyone who gets a gadget with this junk on it. Some of the viruses are reportedly designed to steal passwords, disable virus protection software, and, the old standby, fill your computer with Spam.

Best Buy removed some of the products from its shelves and notified their vendors. Apple (AAPL) said that a "small number" of video iPods in 2006 were infected from a PC that was used to test the software. Target and Sam’s Club said they were investigating the complaints.

In 2006 a small number of iPods had a non-malicious virus from assembly line testing. This was widely reported..2006 !!! How does this merit any attention now in 2008 is beyond me. Unless you want to make a general statement that all devices, not just pc's, are potential targets. But if that is the point, make such in your story and in your headline.

And don't blame AP and say you are just restating their story....the heavy IPod reference is in your headline.

I received an IPOD Nanno for Valentine's Day, 2008, last month. It was infected with a whole bunch of malicious, self-loading viruses/ programs... It took 2 weeks for my tech support and CA nternet Security to help me clean them out -- then I plugged the IPOD into the usb port, just to recharge it, and bam, they were all back. I 1st suspected the IPOD and/ or itunes because it was the 1st new thing I installed since my current Internet Security (CA) in 4/07 and the 1st time anything's gotten past them/ deactiveated them. When it immediately came back while recharging the Nano I was almost positive. So I guess this isn't old news, and you aren't just "hit whores" as Glenn... (probably employees of Apple) would have you and us believe.

Could you please get me in touch with others who have had this problem. We need to join forces. Also, I don't believe there are only a few of us affected/ infected. After the past few weeks and the response of Apple's employees, I'm not so sure this is accidental. And for heaven's sake, don't send your computer or infected Ipod back to them. It's called evidence. My brother is a 32-year employee of Hewlett Packard. I'm taking my damaged computer equipment to him.
