Eliot Spitzer Linked to Prostitution Ring

|

eliotspitzer3.jpgThe New York Times reports:

ALBANY - Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation.

The wiretap recording, made during an investigation of a prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP, captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.

The governor learned that he had been implicated in the prostitution probe when a federal official contacted his staff last Friday, according to the person briefed on the case.

The governor informed his top aides Sunday night and this morning of his involvement. He canceled his public events today and scheduled an announcement for this afternoon after inquiries from the Times.

Eliot Spitzer Apologizes to the Public

The New York Times reports:

Following is an excerpt from Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s statement to the public, delivered at his Midtown Manhattan office on Monday afternoon:

Over the past nine years, eight as attorney general and one as governor, I’ve tried to uphold a vision of progressive politics that would rebuild New York and create opportunity for all. We vowed to bring real change to New York and that will continue. Today, I want to briefly address a private matter. I have acted in a way that violated the obligations to my family and that violates my — or any — sense of right and wrong. I apologize first, and most importantly, to my family. I apologize to the public, whom I promised better. I do not believe that politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas, the public good and doing what is best for the State of New York. But I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard that I expect of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family. I will not be taking questions. Thank you very much. I will report back to you in short order. Thank you very much

Henry, you have to admit that it was hard not to post this story with the slightest smirk on your face. Karma....

Let's see how this sanctimonious steam roller gets his way out of this one. Who's the Lt. Governor (or soon to be governor)?

Just a helpful public service reminder from the office of the governor: If you haven't done so yet, develop a conscience. The career it saves could be your own.

Henry, your restraint is amazing. You are a far better man than I am.

It must have been so sweet writing that... I have to agree with Don- nice job on the post.

So that's it? Lt governor gets the big office? Or does Spitzer have a shot at sticking around? If he wanted to stay, would he have any chance? He would look like an idiot, but this is what, a misdemeanor?

Bad timing for NY dems...

Richie, you just violated the comment policy on SAI, not very family-like reading from you...too bad about Spitzer, I always thought he was the greatest AG NY ever had. I still admire him for who he went after (anyone and anything shady in NY, including, of course, AOL).

I'm sure this was just a weakness of his, and I'm saddened to hear of it.

You guys do know that in the old days (think JFK and backwards in time) affairs and women who um, "work" were not an uncommon indulgence for public officials. Not saying it's right, just saying the government didn't used to sting it's own people for such contretemps, and the media certainly never reported any of it - no; on the contrary, they allowed public officials to have their private lives. I wish it were that way now. It's really none of our business if these guys need more than they're getting at home - that's for him and his family to sort out - isn't it?

This is a personal tragedy for Spitzer, and if nothing else, you have to feel awfully bad for his wife and more particularly his three teenage children. But this is not just another JFK affair. And Spitzer will not survive it. Read some of Congressman Peter King's comments tonight, I think they are representative of how many feel; Spitzer annointed himself the Sheriff of this town, and he ended up on the wrong side of the law. He may be accused of violating the federal Mann Act, as well as evading reporting of currency transactions. Technical violations of vague crimes to be sure, but exactly the sort of weapon Spitzer used to rise to prominence, and no one that he went after will let him get away with this, despite Henry's class avoidance of the subject. If Spitzer resigns, Lt. Gov. David Paterson becomes governor for the remaining 33 months of Spitzer's term. See link to our comprehensive coverage, as of 8 pm, below. Of note is the fact that, of the four major state governors to be embroiled in scandal in this century, two resigned and saved the state house for their party; two held on, and handed the governorship to the other party in the next election.

"Karma"? Are you kidding? If there is karma, Blodget will be coming back as one of the folks that he swindled back in the day. Or a cockroach.

Spitzer's behaviour, no matter how "shameful", is (after all) only human. As for Blodget, well I suppose one could say the same for lying, cheating, and stealing.

Fortunately, what Spitzer did is legal in most of the civilized world, while Blodget's crimes, whether committed in Frankfurt, London, Moscow or Beijing, would have resulted in, shall we say, rather stronger penalties.

Money laundering, human trafficking and extortion is legal in most of the civilized world? Which 'civilized world' are you talking of comrade Tim @ 7:50?

Last I checked he was trapped through a money laundering invertigation - money which was being laundered FOR the mafia. Anf the charges (if he faces any) will also be for the same. High on something Comrade?

This is a little weird. The owner of the domain name of the prostitution ring has an office on Wall Street.
I don't think this story has even begun to unfold. The MSM is calling it a Washington ring, but it seems to be based in New York.

A Chinese and Wall St. link to bringing down the Sheriff of Wall Street? Sounds like someon's revenge plan worked. If I was so inclined to think there was a conspiracy

The bald head reminded me of someone *similar* (not identical) looking who told me about enjoying killing young puerto rican boys (and perhaps in a sexual context but I'm not sure about that since I was concentrated on the belowmentioned psychological conditioning I started); this was circa 1997 (it had to have been 1995-1997, most likely late 1996 to 1997). At that time, I used my psychological powers to attempt to get the man to have less effect of doing such things, and concentrated my efforts entirely in that regard, since I was internally very against such practices to a level that most might not fully comprehend.

Out of more than just curiosity, last night I looked up the pictures of Gov. Spitzer, and verified a different internet photo likeness to the man I met abovedescribed. However, when looking at video of Gov. Spitzer tonight from many clips in the Daily Show With Jon Stewart, the four dimensionality of the video showed me an almost identical person of Gov. Spitzer compared to the above described man. To confirm, I'd need to know more about what Spitzer looked like in 1996-1997.

I am most interested in ending such abovementioned practices that the man so described, whoever and whereever such exists. If it is indeed Sptizer, then it would be good to use that as an avenue to stop it as much as possible.

And to think I was considering writing him to ask for a pardon; if I had such a pardon at this time, I might burn it.

Did anyone try calling 646-299-5708? It is disconnected.

Maybe it's real. But, nonetheless, I;'m sure the feds have gotten this guy or woman.

I wouldn`t compare Spitzer with a criminal, if a man enjoys women and pays for it this is not a case of a deranged mind. I`m sure many of today`s critics have also used an escort before, like Spitzer when he was after many other men as a prosecutor.

What strikes me as odd is that the Internet is being used by so many escort services nowadays, openly in the States as if it was any other trade activity.

I searched Google and found so many escorts in DC, and why do the feds allow this? if it isn`t legal, there shouldn`t be any sites at all (....)

I found out that even "Escorts Resorts" exist, where men would travel overseas to the Caribbean and spend a weekend with beautiful models, all-inclusive in total luxury ( charlisangels resort advertises russian women as escorts ).

Scores of other sites offer the same thing, and the market is huge. Spitzer`s only the beginning, and he was lucky that he lasted a decade.

The story, however, is not even about sex although that is what attracted our attention. Like him or hate him, this is about our own bewilderment.
