Citi: Apple's iPhone Good For Games, Not Big-Business Email

Yesterday, Apple (AAPL) boss Steve Jobs unveiled some new iPhone features, including better support for corporate email, calendars, and contacts, running through Microsoft's (MSFT) Exchange server software. Jobs chose Microsoft's ActiveSync product over Research In Motion's rival BlackBerry software, which Apple exec Phil Schiller mocked during his presentation as being convoluted and unreliable.

Citi's analyst Richard Gardner and Jim Suva think otherwise. They argue that Apple is betting on the underdog. "While Apple claims superior reliability and security with ActiveSync, RIM’s overwhelming dominance within the enterprise push e-mail installed base today suggests a slow, uphill battle for iPhone in the enterprise."

Fair enough. But Gardner and Suva also note that Apple's likely to have "more immediate success" with small and mid-sized businesses and consumers -- markets that are increasingly important to RIM. Last quarter, 34% of RIM's subscribers were "non-enterprise," up from 30% the quarter before. So while Apple might not raid RIM's big-business and government deals overnight, it could cut off a vital source of growth.

Separately, the Citi guys are excited about the iPhone's new software kit, which they think could make a great mobile gaming platform. Combine that with the imminent launch of a "3G" iPhone capable of connecting to faster wireless Internet service, and greater global iPhone availability, and Citi's analysts are "increasingly comfortable" with Apple's goal of selling 10 million iPhones this year. We are too.

Years back many business users were wedded to DOS insisting vehemently that the enterprise will never adopt the graphical user interface "it's a TOY!". The same kind of logic is used to bash Apple now. Many don't understand that IPhones and future iDevices especially now with the SDK are not just phones but mobile computers allowing people to be connected 24/7, colleges are already passing them out so that students and faculty can be linked. This is a hyper competitive world, enterprises that don't adopt the best new tech, that behave like their DOS loving ancestors will be eaten alive.

In these lean economic times, the objective is to save money, if it is cheaper to use Exchange the change will come.

You have to believe that Apple looked at this from a "whole business" perspective. Exchange Server in NO way conflicts with any of Apple's business lines. Exchange does not promote any single brand of phone.

Not to mention, MS has NOT had good results in the mobile space: RIM is slaughtering them with a nice combo of service that connects to a wide range of email servers AND attractive handsets.

If Apple were to license the RIM protocol (which RIM may not have been willing to do), that allows Apple to go head-to-head with the best. The crackberry addicts are the ones most vocal about liking the "real" keys on their devices, so certainly if it came to a choice, Apple was smart to go up against new markets and those dog HP, Dell and other mobile smartphones.

Give it another year & I expect you'll see 3 email interfaces on the iPhone: Exchange, Lotus and Blackberry.
